There's now just one week to go until The Mix 2024 and we are super-excited to welcome nearly 2,000 children and young people from schools across Devon to Bridwell on Friday 5 July. We have capacity for a small number of last minute bookings if you would like to bring along a school or home-educated group to join in the fun.
On Saturday 6 July, everyone is welcome for a family-friendly day of inspirational live music and activities. FREE to attend, but booking strongly recommended!
One of the key recommendations of the revised National Plan for Music Education (published June 2022) is that all schools should have a Music Development Plan. While this guidance is not new, DfE have recently reiterated and strengthened the wording, and now expects all schools to include a summary of their Music Development Plan on their website by 1 September 2024. A suggested template is now available – the template is not mandatory, and schools should feel free to adapt it.
Devon Music Education Hub has produced a Music Development Plan self-evaluation tool – this goes above and beyond DfE requirements and is intended to support schools with this process. To be eligible to receive Music Education Grant (MEG) funding, schools will need to share their self-evaluation judgment with the Hub, as well as completing a basic data submission. Additional support is available from your local Music Development Lead.
The latest in the Music Mark #ResearchShorts is penned by Mark Phillips, formerly a Senior HMI and Ofsted's National Lead for Music. It focuses on supporting secondary school and is based on Mark's work with school in Devon and Torbay earlier in the year as part of the Hub's Developing Ambitious School Music (DASM) initiative. Mark's research dives into assessing Year 7 pupils' prior knowledge as they arrive in Secondary school, observing teaching and learning, and providing a possible starting point for baseline (or should we say bassline!) assessment.

Delegates at the recent Devon Music Education Conference had the opportunity to see first hand a wide selection of music-related books for children and young people, curated by our colleagues from the School Library Service. Amongst other recommended reading topics, you can now find a Music Book List on the School Library Service website, which includes suggested picture books, junior fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as appropriate books for teens - these are all available for schools to purchase at a discounted rate.
