As part of our core offer, ALL local authority maintained schools and academies in Torbay and Devon can apply for delegated Music Education Grant (MEG) funding. In 2024-25, eligible schools will receive £400, which is intended to support delivery of the National Plan for Music Education, particularly Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET).
Please note that for academic year 2024-25 this funding is not available for schools in Plymouth.
In order to qualify for Music Education Grant (MEG) funding, your school will need to…
- Complete a basic data submission for each school
- Use the School Music Development Plan self-evaluation tool to make a judgement on your current provision (Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum) and share this with the Hub.
- Tell us how you would like to receive your MEG funding.
Department for Education (DfE) expects schools to publish their Music Development Plan on the school website by 1 September 2024 and has published a suggested template. Our School Music Development Plan self-evaluation tool goes above and beyond DfE requirements and is intended to support schools with this process.
We will be will be offering an Online Teach Meet to answer any questions around School Music Development Plans and Music Education Grant (MEG) funding applications from 4pm on Tuesday 25 June. Advice and support is also available from your local Music Development Lead.
Thank you to all of the fantastic children and young people that performed on the BBC Radio Devon Bandstand at this year's Devon County Show. We were delighted to be able pack the stage with more music than ever before, featuring schools from all areas of Devon from 9am to 5pm on Thursday and Friday. Saturday was a little bit of a wash out, with many people requiring the assistance of a tractor to get out of the car park at the end of the day...but that's Devon County Show! Despite the rain, most of our County Groups and Hub supported music activities also got to perform, with nearly 500 young musicians involved throughout the show. Many of the performers also got the chance to try their hand at DJing with Hub partners Sound Communities, who again brought along the Boom Bus to deliver workshops on the Devon County Council stand. A big thank you the show organisers and BBC Radio Devon, who featured many of our young performers on air.
All Devon & Torbay maintained schools and academies benefit from 100% subsidised access to instruments and resources to support the delivery of Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET) and projects – over 15,000 instruments have been loaned to schools over the last year allowing thousands of children and young people to take the first steps in their musical journey.
Please note: The deadline to request instrument class sets for the autumn term has been extended to Monday 10 June 2024.
It was great to be back at The BIG Sheep for this year's Bideford Area Music Festival with nearly 500 children and young people performing across two events facilitated by Debbie Kent and Tom Deam with support from local schools and Hub partners North Devon Taiko. Well done to all our participating school and a big thank you to The BIG Sheep for hosting.
Nominate your Creative Hero! These awards celebrate the incredible efforts of those working to provide opportunities in art, music, dance, creative writing, media and many other art forms. Our schools and communities are full of unsung heroes - let's celebrate them! Anyone can nominate a Creative Hero - they might be a teacher, teaching assistant, youth worker, young person, or just an individual in the community who is doing great things to help children and young people access creative arts opportunities. Co-hosted by the Devon Cultural Education Partnership and Torbay Arts in Schools Network, the Awards Celebration Party will take place at Exeter Phoenix on Saturday 29 June 4-6pm.
We are SO excited that The Mix, our music festival for children and young people, is returning in 2024! Taking place over two days at Bridwell Park, admission on Friday 5 July will be exclusively reserved for school groups, with Saturday 6 July open to families and the general public. To make The Mix run smoothly, we need YOU, a wealth of volunteers ready to muck in and help wherever is needed (lunch will be provided)! We welcome applications from anyone with an interest in music, including young people aged 16 or over.
Delegates at the recent Devon Music Education Conference had the opportunity to see first hand a wide selection of music-related books for children and young people, curated by our colleagues from the School Library Service. Amongst other recommended reading topics, you can now find a Music Book List on the School Library Service website, which includes suggested picture books, junior fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as appropriate books for teens - these are all available for schools to purchase at a discounted rate.
