Centre news for June

Welcome back, we hope you had a restful half term. We have a few events taking place during June and there's still time to sign up if you would like to attend. Join us at one of our Secondary library network meetings focussing on wellbeing and empathy booklists.  Taking place on 26 June at Ilfracombe Academy or 27 June at Exeter School.  Free of charge, commences1.30pm.

The Yoto Carnegie medal for illustration event is being held at Pathways School on 19 June.  You can bring along a group of pupils from KS2 and 3.

Free of charge, commences 10am.

The Children's Bookshow is being held in October at the Northcott Theatre and showcases the best children's books with authors and illustrators live on stage.  This year's performance will be with award-winning poet Kate Wakeling and the illustrator Elina Braslina. Each month the advisory team collate lists for KS1, KS2 and Teens on topical themes. The next couple of months will see the 'kick off' of 2 great sporting competitions, Euro 2024 starting in June and the Olympics in July.  The advisers have chosen a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books to generate interest and enthusiasm in sport.

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller history month 2024

Through celebration, education and raising awareness, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller history month (GRTHM) helps to raise awareness of these communities and their contributions to society, and to offset negative stereotyping and prejudices.  GRTHM takes place every June but these resources can be used at anytime of the year to support awareness of Traveller history and culture.

New!! Suggested reading lists

All of our Suggested Reading lists for 2024/25 have now been updated. The School Library Advisors have chosen the best reads for each year group from Nursery through to KS4.

Booklists reflecting Ethnic Diversity

The Ethnic minority and Traveller achievement service (EMTAS) and Devon library service believe that every child should be seen in their school and setting. This means ensuring that not only websites and publications reflect your schools community but also your reading lists and children’s exposure to different cultures and identities. Through Equality, diversity and inclusion pupil forums our Devon children have said they want to learn more about different identities and to celebrate all ethnicities, with one primary child saying ‘We are all different, we are individual jewels’.

The library service and EMTAS have collaborate in response to this feedback by creating book lists for EYFS, KS1 LKS2 and UKS2 so that Devon children can continue their growth mindset journey. For further support any BPRI reporting setting can book a free BPRI clinic to discuss an incident, as well as their wide equality and diversity provision.
