National Survey for Care Homes on the draft Registered Manager and Deputy Manager role categories
On 10 January 2024, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) launched part 1 of the Care Workforce Pathway. Developed in partnership with Skills for Care, part 1 focused on staff working in direct care roles outlining an initial four role categories. Contained within each role category is a defined set of behaviours, knowledge and skills expected of someone to work at that level. (The Care Workforce Pathway)
Following release of part 1 of the care workforce pathway, we have continued to work in partnership with DHSC on phase 2. This has included developing additional role categories for Deputy Managers and Registered Managers. We’d like to hear from you about some of the content we have developed, including the behaviours they should show, how we’ve described these roles, and on the knowledge and skills we think people working in these roles should have.
The survey should take 30 minutes to complete and will close on Monday 13 May at 23.59pm.
You can access the survey here: Access the survey.
If you have any further comments that can’t be included in the survey, please contact NWDCapabilityandSkills@SkillsforCare.org.uk stating that you’re getting in touch regarding the registered manager and deputy manager role categories survey.

Advice on how to manage the use of Spice or other drugs in Accommodation Settings
Following reports of workers who support people who use drugs and specifically those who smoke Spice, Public Health Devon have produced this list of recommendations to help protect the workforces who are based in temporary or supported accommodation settings:
1. Make sure all areas are well ventilated.
2. Encourage staff to report these incidents on your incident logs (e.g. Datix)
3. Where possible get workers affected checked by a healthcare professional.
4. Remove yourself from the areas affected by second-hand smoke and warn managers of the areas affected to prevent others from becoming unwell.
5. Do not allow the individual whose used drugs or any worker impacted by the drugs to drive and support them in getting home or to a place of safety.
6. Consider inviting the individuals to a multi-agency meeting about their circumstances to help prevent eviction and coproduce with the individual an action plan that helps improve their circumstances (health and wellbeing) and safeguards their welfare.
7. If an individual who uses drugs becomes unwell please get healthcare involved or call 999 in a medical emergency.
8. Report any safeguarding concerns about the individuals using drugs.
9. Encourage and or support the individual using drugs by referring them to the treatment service Together (Humankind)
10. If a member of the workforce doesn’t feel confident in providing alcohol and drug awareness and harm reduction messages then please arrange training from Together (Humankind) t: 0800 233 5444 or e: info@edp.org.uk
Disability Focus continuing support for Self-employed Care Workers
Disability Focus is delighted to announce that Simon Tickner is continuing in his role supporting people to set up as self-employed care/support workers (microproviders) in Devon. This position is an extension of the Community Catalysts project that began in 2022 with Devon County Council’s support. A new partnership now exists between all three organisations alongside a shared commitment to ensuring that the unique service that self-employed carers can offer is as reliable and professional as other services in Devon’s adult social care market.
Simon has spent many years working in regulated care services but strongly believes that those requiring care and support should be able to select what is right for them from a range of options. His role is to assist people who are motivated to set up their own small, highly personal, self-employed local business in a way that that ensures they are high quality, legal, safe, and sustainable.
