This is your opportunity to influence the national workforce strategy: What would the adult social care workforce look like to you if it were fixed?
We all know how crucial a strong workforce is to the success of social care. In an exciting development, Skills For Care is leading the development of a new national strategy for the adult social care workforce, which will sit alongside the NHS Workforce Strategy, giving a strong voice to our sector as we continue along the integration journey.
Ian Hobbs from Devon County Council sits on one of the expert groups which is contributing to the strategy, with a particular focus on Recruitment and Retention. As part of that work it has been agreed we engage Devon’s adult social care providers to take your advice on what would make the biggest difference to securing and retaining the workforce.
We would like to invite you to meet with us and with Skills For Care team so that your thinking can inform the strategy. This is a rare opportunity to participate in the formulation of such an important national strategy, which we hope will shape the approach to workforce over the next 15 years and we’d be delighted if you would join us at this event and subsequent meetings over the coming months as the strategy is developed.
Ahead of the meeting we will be canvassing views from providers through a variety of means and these insights will form a key part of the event. The two attachments give you a brief overview of the shape of the Strategy and of the Devon workforce and provides an important back drop to the event.
The agenda for the event is:
Welcome and Introduction – Nicola Tribble and Ian Hobbs

Fully funded Coaching Workshops
We are offering two fully funded, in person workshops for colleagues in Social Care who have an interest in coaching and would like to develop their skills. The dates for these workshops are 29 February and 7 March and the venue will Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre.
The focus will be on career coaching to enable people to build their career within their organisation. The workshops will be led by the South West Leadership and Talent Team.
In these workshops, the South West Leadership & Talent team will introduce participants to fundamental coaching skills and Scope for Growth. Coaching fundamentals include understanding the power of contracting, listening and asking insightful questions in order to support individuals to achieve their goals.
Scope for Growth is a new career conversation tool, which promotes an inclusive career conversation and provides an opportunity for everyone to take ownership of their own development and career aspirations, whatever those may be. In our session, we will introduce participants to the framework and support them to reflect on their next career steps.
This person-centred framework supports those who want to develop within their current role, as well as those ready to take their next career step within their own organisation; putting colleagues in the driving seat of their career development. During the session, participants will be given an opportunity to test out their coaching skills in a safe space and practise these through utilising the Scope for Growth career conversation tool.
