NEW** SEND Advisory team launching in January
To support Devon’s SEND transformation programme, there has been some restructuring in the SEND support teams, leading to the creation of a new SEND advisory team, which will work alongside existing DCC advisory teams. This team will be led by the SEND Advisor (Hannah Chamings) and consist of 4 SEND advisory teachers, all who have a significant amount of experience of leading SEND in both mainstream and specialist settings. These 4 advisory teachers have been working within the C&I team over the past term and will continue to build on these experiences and the relationships they’ve begun to build with schools within this new role. The C&I team will be maintaining their offer of support through the activities already accessed by schools and more information will follow about this in the new year.
The purpose of the SEND advisory team is to work collaboratively with SENCos, leaders of teaching and learning and teaching staff to build knowledge, skill and confidence in developing and embedding high quality, whole school approaches to SEND and Inclusion with the aim of improving outcomes and experiences for all children and young people, and their families. This team will focus on strengthening a holistic approach to delivering high quality, adaptive provision that supports all children to have their needs identified and met as early as possible.
Each team member will be based in one of the 4 localities (North, East, Central and Mid, South and West) and will work closely with all schools, LA and MAT, through a variety of activities which will be free to access (apart from some specific training offers) including:
- Local network meetings
- SENCo mentoring and coaching
- Strategic support visits working collaboratively on an agreed focus, for example, identification of need, graduated response, adaptive teaching and the curriculum, producing quality support plans, pupil and parent voice, assessing and monitoring small steps of progress.
- Collaborative working with existing DCC teams, such as C&I, SEMH, Physical and Sensory, EPS and school effectiveness
- Training through workshops, webinars and bespoke training for individual or groups of schools
We are looking forward to working with schools over the coming months to shape and develop this new role to ensure it is responsive to needs and continues to build on and strengthen our supportive partnership work with schools.
Look out for more communication in the new year from your new SEND advisory teacher. They will be making contact with schools and offering introductory meetings with SENCos and SEND leads to find out what’s already working well for your SEND learners and how they can support you further to develop exceptional whole school SEND provision in your setting.
Best wishes
Hannah Chamings, Send Advisor
