Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs invite you to join us for a day of professional development for music educators and anyone that delivers curriculum music provision in schools - we have two events taking place in the new year for you to choose from:
Sessions will include:
- Specialist support with Timothy Bond from Charanga Musical School
- An interactive workshop facilitated by Daisi supporting transition to Secondary using Primary YuStudio software
- Developing your singing assembly to support curriculum music, initiating collaboration across communities
- Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET) with Music Development Leads
- and much more…
We are delighted to be working with colleagues at Wiltshire Music Connect to create a range of customised resources to explain why music matters to children and young people. As well as printable Why Music? leaflets about music at primary/secondary transition and careers in the music industry (available to download from our website), you can now find a brand new video that explains the benefits of studying music at KS4 on our YouTube channel. We hope that schools will find this a helpful resource to share with young people and their parents/carers as they consider their KS4 options.
We are SO excited to confirm that The Mix, our music festival for children and young people, will return on 5 – 6 July 2024!
You can look forward to a wealth of live music performances and interactive workshops, guaranteed to enthuse and inspire children and young people (and those that work with them!) about music, performance and creativity.
Taking place over two days at Bridwell Park, admission on the Friday will be exclusively reserved for school groups, with Saturday open to families and the general public.
Please book your school places below. We will share a separate booking link for Saturday’s free event (open to everyone) in due course.
We have just added a new Visiting Music Teacher Directory to our website, which allows users to search for teachers by geographical area, specialism and teaching type e.g. individual lessons, small groups, WCET etc. We hope this will make it easier for schools and parents/carers to connect with teachers and music education providers in their area, particularly as more colleagues sign up. If you're a Visiting Music Teacher or music education provider and would like to listed in the directory, please register here.
Join members of Devon Youth Choir and Devon Youth Chamber Brass at the Chapel of Exeter School for a informal performance of Nine Lessons and Carols. Both groups will perform Christmas favourites and readings, as well as congregational carols to mark the festive season. This event is free to attend with no advanced booking required. A retiring (cash) collection will be offered as part of our fundraising efforts towards Devon Youth Choir and Devon Youth Wind Orchestra’s forthcoming tour to Paris. Donations can also be made online.
If a new musical instrument is on the young person in your life's Christmas list, it's worth remembering that the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS), which is supported by HMRC, enables you to purchase an instrument for educational purposes without paying VAT (Value Added Tax).
In order to comply with HMRC regulations, students must be in full time education at a Local Authority maintained school or college (not an Academy or Independent school) OR regularly participate in an ensemble, music centre, or county music group supported by Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs.
In this special event for GCSE and BTEC music students and teachers from Devon, Plymouth and Torbay secondary schools, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) perform pieces from the current GCSE syllabus, as well as a live composition based on your ideas. Presented by BSO Associate Musician Patrick Bailey, KS4 Set Works Live concerts trace the development of music from the baroque period to the present day, supporting the music education of all KS4 music students.
- 1-2.30pm Wednesday 28 February 2024 @ Plymouth Marjon University
- 1-2.30pm Thursday 29 February 2024 @ Uffculme School
The development of instruments and tastes is used as a narrative hook, allowing students to understand why styles vary from genre to genre, from harpsichord in Bach to musical theatre. The event also includes access to a private online page featuring digital learning resources available until the end of the academic year to support study.
These events are fully subsidised by Plymouth Music Education Hub and Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs and will be kindly hosted by Plymouth Marjon University and Uffculme School.
