On Tuesday 14 November, members of Devon Youth Chamber Brass represented the Hub at the Music For Youth Proms, performing as part of this year's Creative Project composed by Jack Pepper. One of the highlights of the music education calendar, the Music for Youth Proms take place annually at London's iconic Royal Albert Hall, showcasing talented young musicians from all corners of the UK.
Devon Youth Chamber Brass provides opportunities for brass and percussion players aged 11-18 with regular sessions taking place at King Edward VI Community College, Totnes. Schools represented in this performance were Churston Ferrers Grammar School, Clyst Vale Community College, Colyton Grammar School, Exeter School, Ivybridge Community College, Okehampton Community College, South Dartmoor Community College, Torquay Boys Grammar School, Torquay Girls Grammar School, as well as FE students from Exeter College.
A big thank you to Sam Massey and Kathy Banks for preparing the group, as well as staff from the Hub who accompanied our young musicians on what was a very long (but totally worthwhile) day!
Over 300 children from primary schools across Torbay, performed to a packed Exeter Cathedral as part of this term's Chorister Outreach Programme concert, which was attended by the Civic Mayor of Torbay, Cllr Mark Spacagna, and his consort.
The Chorister Outreach Programme is run as a collaboration between Exeter Cathedral and the Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs. As well as advice and support for staff, each school receives three workshops with skilled vocal practitioner, Andrew Downton. Choristers from Exeter Cathedral join one of these sessions to inspire the children and talk about life as a chorister. Each term, the Chorister Outreach Programme culminates in a large scale Saturday afternoon performance at Exeter Cathedral to celebrate the musical achievements of all children involved.
The schools featured in this term's performance were Cockington Primary School, Homelands Primary School, Ilsham CofE Academy, Roselands Primary School, Sacred Heart CofE Primary School, Shiphay Learning Academy, St Marychurch CofE Primary School and White Rock Primary School. The concert also featured Devon County Junior Choir, Schola Exe and the Choristers of Exeter Cathedral.
We are thrilled to announce the dates for The Mix will be Friday 5 and Saturday 6 July 2024 and hosted at Bridwell Park in Mid Devon by permission of Lord Mountbatten. The development of instruments and tastes is used as a narrative hook, allowing students to understand why styles vary from genre to genre, from harpsichord in Bach to musical theatre. The event also includes access to a private online page featuring digital learning resources available until the end of the academic year to support study.
These events are fully subsidised by Plymouth Music Education Hub and Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs and will be kindly hosted by Plymouth Marjon University and Uffculme School.
We have just added a new Visiting Music Teacher Directory to our website, which allows users to search for teachers by geographical area, specialism and teaching type e.g. individual lessons, small groups, WCET etc. We hope this will make it easier for schools and parents/carers to connect with teachers and music education providers in their area, particularly as more colleagues sign up. If you're a Visiting Music Teacher or music education provider and would like to listed in the directory, please register here.
