Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs are delighted to be working in partnership with Live Music Now to provide a fun and inspiring workshop for young musicians with Back Chat Brass. Join us at King Edward VI Community College, Totnes TQ9 5JX on Sunday 15 October from 2-5pm.
This event is aimed at young musicians that play any brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. No graded music exams need to have been taken but we suggest that you are working at Grade 3 level of ability or higher.
On the day, you will get to hear Back Chat Brass perform before becoming part of the band to learn some tracks from the Back Chat Play educational resources, supported by professional musicians and members of the Hub team. At the end of the afternoon, parents/carers and supporters are invited to join us for a short performance.
This is a FREE event supported by Live Music Now and Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs, but advance booking is essential.

We are delighted to be working with colleagues at Wiltshire Music Connect to create a range of customised resources to explain why music matters to children and young people. Most people know that music is a ‘good thing’. Research proves again and again that it is so important to children and young people’s lives and futures. Why? Because music education…
-
increases confidence and self-esteem – which has a knock-on effect in all areas of their life and learning.
-
improves health and wellbeing – reducing stress, increasing a sense of wellbeing and happiness.
-
provides important life and social skills – such as listening, concentration, working as a team.
-
develops creativity and self-expression – helping young people to think differently and develop their power of imagination.
-
improves cognition, literacy and numeracy – recent neuroscience research has shown that children who learn an instrument have higher levels of cognitive capacity, specifically in their language acquisition and numerical problem-solving skills.
-
can be the key to unlocking potential – particularly for young people who are strongly creative, or who struggle to engage with other areas of learning.
Check out the Why Music? area on our website for more information and printable leaflets on your child and music at transition and careers in the music industry, with lots more resources to follow over the next few months.
Great news for young musicians in Exeter and East Devon facing financial or other barriers to engaging in music. Awards for Young Musicians have a new award supported by East Devon Music. An AYM Award can support your musical growth by offering financial help, professional advice and opportunities. You may be eligible if:
- You're aged 5-17.
- Living and studying in the UK.
- Your family are on a low income.
The Chorister Outreach Programme is designed to encourage and enable Cathedrals to use their musical resources to promote singing among Key Stage 2 children. In Devon & Torbay, this initiative is run as a collaboration between Exeter Cathedral and Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs and forms a key part of our singing strategy. Open to all Devon & Torbay maintained primary schools and academies on a fully subsidised basis thanks to funding and in-kind support from Exeter Cathedral and the Hub, it’s delivered in a different geographical area each term.
As well as advice and support for staff, each school receives three workshops with a skilled vocal practitioner. Choristers from Exeter Cathedral join one of these sessions to inspire the children and talk about life as a chorister. The Chorister Outreach Programme usually culminates in a large scale Saturday afternoon performance at Exeter Cathedral to celebrate the musical achievements of all children involved.
During 2023-24 the Chorister Outreach Programme will work with schools in Torbay (autumn), Exeter (spring) and South Hams (summer). We currently have capacity for more Torbay primary schools to get involved in this term's project.
