Devon Food Insecurity Task Group established
Back in May, we worked with Devon Community Foundation (DCF) to co-host the first Devon Food Insecurity Summit at the University of Exeter.
The starting point for the event was a cluster of qualitative research projects and action research pilots, funded by DCF, Devon County Council, and the VCSE (Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise) Assembly, exploring aspects of the experience of food insecurity in Devon, and approaches to making support more accessible and inclusive.
The Summit brought together an invited group of researchers, councillors, local authority representatives, and VCSE organisations, to consider the insight gathered, and discuss consequent action.
To build on the momentum from the Devon Food Insecurity Summit, we are now setting up a Devon Food Insecurity Task Group. This group will bring together stakeholders to share insights, evidence, and examples of best practice; engage in advocacy and campaigning; and foster better relationships between partnerships, producers, providers, and consumers.

Record numbers of families receive food support this summer
A record number of children have received summer holiday food support from Devon County Council this year.
Over 20,000 supermarket vouchers have been sent to low-income families around the county. Each child currently eligible for free school meals has received a £90 voucher to support household budgets over the summer holiday period.
Additionally, the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is offering free activities and clubs for children across Devon where food will also be provided. Plymouth and Torbay Councils are running similar schemes separately.

Grants available to groups giving their community a helping hand
Projects supporting communities facing food and fuel insecurity during the cost-of-living crisis can apply for grants of up to £3,000 from Devon County Council’s Growing Communities Fund (GCF).
Originally set up in 2022, the GCF aims to support proactive, effective, measurable, and sustainable actions to enable individuals and communities to build self-reliance and improve mental health and wellbeing during the cost-of-living crisis.
Over £530,000 in grants has been awarded to 300 local projects over the past year to help communities cope with the continued high cost of food and bills. The GCF remains open to new applications until Sunday 31 March 2024.

Public consultation on proposed changes to agricultural planning rules
The UK Government has published proposed changes to planning rules to make agricultural diversification and development easier.
The proposed changes would expand permitted development rights, giving farmers greater freedom to change the use of agricultural buildings. These changes are now open for a public consultation.
The consultation asks you to consider the short and long-term impact of these changes on the environment and local communities.
Additionally, the UK Government are requesting case studies to better understand what issues farmers and land managers are facing. Specifically, they request evidence on nature-based solutions, farm efficiency projects, and farm diversification.
The consultation closes on Monday 25 September.
