These are fully funded for maintained schools and early year settings (attached to maintained schools) in Devon, excluding Plymouth. They are also being delivered at a discounted rate for all other settings.
June was GRTHM and was celebrated in many schools across Devon, giving staff and children the opportunity to learn more about the culture and heritage of our Travelling communities. We also had some fantastic entries to our art competition, to design a piece of art work in the style of Gabi Jimenez.
We are pleased to announce that the winning and runner up entries were by Year 2 children from Stoke Hill Infant and Nursery School. Congratulations!

What you can expect from EMTAS next academic year
Improving attendance and attainment - Support and intervention for ethnically diverse children whose attendance or attainment is causing concern.
To Be Seen project – Only 4% of schools landing pages on their websites display a visibly ethnically diverse child or staff member. We believe that every child should be represented in school graphics and so our To Be Seen project will raise awareness within schools to ensure that children feel included.
Website update – This academic year we have improved our systems to meet the needs of schools. This included the introduction of clinics and our new monthly newsletter. Over the summer holidays, we will be updating our website, in response to feedback to make it easier to find information.
Cultural celebrations - An education that promotes cultural diversity, provides safe and affirming education for all children. It is incredibly important that other cultures and languages are celebrated in our schools and communities.
Next academic year, our Bilingual Support Workers will again be offering settings bilingual storytelling sessions.
EAL support
Supporting bilingual children - Bilingual induction programmes and long-term bilingual support where a need has been identified.
Ukrainian support - Year 7 and Reception Ukrainian bilingual support programmes. Fully funded bilingual support for transitioning children and interpreter support for induction meetings. To access this support please complete a referral form.
EAL in early years - Language develops rapidly in the early years and all young children, including children learning EAL, benefit from good quality provision which focuses on interaction and the development of communication skills.
Next term, our team will focus on supporting young children, their families and practitioners to improve quality of EAL provision.
Supporting vocabulary development - Vocabulary development is vital for children learning EAL. Limited vocabulary impacts on attainment, attendance, affects self-esteem and behaviour and therefore it is an area which needs to be addressed.
Our team will be providing schools with training sessions, guidance, consultations and advisory visits to support development of school-wide approach to the EAL vocabulary teaching.

GRTS support
World Fun Fair Month - September is dedicated to celebrating our Showmen children and families. World Fun Fair Month was started by Future 4 Fairgrounds, which is a community organisation set up by 6 Showmen women to celebrate the Showmen community as well as raise awareness of the challenges they face. Look out for ideas and resources to celebrate this month in your school on the EMTAS website.
