Diabetes Training for Care Services in the North
The Northern Devon Care Homes Team are excited to announce that they are offering Diabetes Awareness training to ALL Care Providers in North Devon.
The Diabetes training can be provided either Face to Face or virtually via MS Teams.
The Diabetes training will enable your team to:
- Describe what diabetes is
- Identify different types of diabetes
- Identify the signs and symptoms associated with diabetes
- Discuss the healthy eating principles associated with Diabetes
- Identify complications related to diabetes associated with; Hypoglycaemia, Hyperglycaemia, Infections, Circulatory complications relating to limbs, Renal impairment and Deterioration of eyesight.
Training will be delivered over two 1 hour sessions.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism- New draft code of practice released
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism has been co-produced, trialled, independently evaluated and will be co-delivered by trainers with lived experience of learning disability and autism. Care Quality Commission registered health and social care providers must ensure that all staff, regardless of role or level of seniority, have the right attitude and skills to support people with a learning disability and autistic people. Providers will need to demonstrate to the CQC how their training meets or exceeds the standards set out in this code of practice. The 2022 Act sets out a requirement for registered providers to ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training that is appropriate to the person’s role.
Tier 1 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need. The tier 1 training structure includes eLearning and the 1 hour online interactive session co-delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person along with a facilitator.
Tier 2 of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability. The Tier 2 training structure includes the eLearning and 1 day face to face training co-delivered a person with a learning disability and an autistic person and trainer.
The eLearning package is now live on the eLearning for healthcare website. The eLearning session has been co-created and delivered with experts by experience. It should take you 90 minutes to complete. More information on how to register and access the eLearning.
Current: Devon will be piloting the online interactive sessions and face to face training with local training provider Living Options. We will be sharing updates on how to register when the training is available from September to October this year. This will be a rolling programme with lots of opportunities to attend the training. T-level Student Opportunities Event
Working in partnership the Department for Education, AoC and NHS England SW (workforce, education and training) are hosting a FREE face to face event to promote T-level student placements.
It will provide networking opportunities over a complimentary light lunch and will take place on Tuesday 18 July, from 12.3 to 4pm at Taunton Rugby Club TA2 8BU

Nutrition and Hydration training
Intake of good nutrition and hydration is a fundamental part of everyday life, but can often be challenging for individuals, especially in supported living and residential care settings. The impact of poor nutrition and hydration has far reaching effects on quality of life and overall health. This training is aimed at care staff, to give practical guidance on how to support residents / clients to maintain optimum dietary and fluid intake.

The training is being offered either Face to Face or Virtually via MS Teams, according to your preference and the Team’s capacity.
Training can be provided within your own setting or in a central venue by arrangement.

Are your contact details up-to-date?
We encourage providers to update their contact details (especially email addresses) with the Procurement team. We use these details to communicate with providers. It is very important that we reach the correct person in your organisation to receive appropriate referrals and timely updates from DCC, and that you do not miss out on any opportunities. Please ensure we have your most recent email address.
Are you struggling with the cost of living? Reminder!
There's some useful advice on our website for residents and businesses in Devon who are struggling to afford to pay for their energy, water, food or other essential items. It includes information about support for low-income families via the Household Support Fund, such as free school meal holiday vouchers, the holiday activities and food programme and 'Fuel, Food and More' grants.
There's also help for those using pre-payment meters, and who are struggling to meet their energy needs, via Citizens Advice Devon.
The Warm Spaces website has a map of places in the community that are free to go and be comfortable and warm with no judgement. They include places such community centres, churches and libraries.
If you can't afford the food you need, you can contact one of Devon's foodbanks listed on our PinPoint website. There are a number of supermarkets, cafés and restaurants offering free or £1 meals for children during the school holidays.
Integrated Care System for Devon (ICSD)
ICSD is a partnership of health and social care organisations working together with local communities across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay to improve people’s health, wellbeing and care. Their website contains general information on vaccination including FAQs.
The Health and Social Care Skills Accelerator Programme (HSSAP), part funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) is pleased to be offering FREE Optimal Handed Care Moving and Handling courses to Domiciliary Care Providers to support you and your organisation with single handed care approaches. These 3-hour sessions will increase your confidence and enhance your practical skills in safe moving and handling practice.
Courses will run weekly and be available through Petroc College and South Devon College from March to July 2023.

How to access Grey Matter Learning
To sign up for an account, all providers and personal assistants contact the Grey Matter Learning team. Select access training and then complete the contact us page that you would like an account under the Devon County Council funding. A member of the Grey Matter Learning team will then be in touch with you to set up an account.
