Celebrating the Success of the Virtual Dementia Tour – May 2023
The Virtual Dementia Tour, organised by the Health and Social Care Skills Accelerator Programme (HSSAP), part funded by the European Social Fund, was an incredible success!
The tour took place in May across five locations in Devon – Plymouth, Exeter, Tavistock, Barnstaple and Paignton – with a total of 169 people participating in the fully funded training from over 80 organisations. The participants ranged from individuals who work in Care Homes and Domiciliary Care to nursing students, unpaid carers, personal assistants, members of the police and fire services and many more.
The feedback from participants was entirely positive, with many expressing their desire to put the training into practice immediately by altering their approach to care and implementing the suggested solutions to improve the lives of people living with dementia.
‘[The training] changed the way I think about dementia. I thought I knew quite a lot about dementia because I work in healthcare. But this training has changed my perception of it’ - Nuch
‘This is a fabulous experience that everyone in care should experience to improve the care of dementia patients’ - Kelly
‘Every person who cares for someone with dementia should take this course’ - Amy
The Virtual Dementia Tour training provided participants with the experience of what having dementia is like. By walking in the shoes of a person with dementia, participants began to understand to a greater degree the challenges that people with dementia experience every day. The training stimulated the senses so that participants felt confused, isolated, lost, intimidated, vulnerable and much more. The participants were therefore able to understand what changes could be made to improve the quality of care for people with dementia and reflect on the provision of support and services to meet their needs.
The Health and Social Care Skills Accelerator Programme (HSSAP), part funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) is pleased to be offering FREE Optimal Handed Care Moving and Handling courses to Domiciliary Care Providers to support you and your organisation with single handed care approaches. These 3-hour sessions will increase your confidence and enhance your practical skills in safe moving and handling practice.
Courses will run weekly and be available through Petroc College and South Devon College from March to July 2023.
