Changes to Care Direct Adult Social Care call-handling
From June 2023 a long-awaited change will take place whereby Care Direct will cease taking Adult Social Care calls.
New telephony options will replace the requirement for people to be transferred from Care Direct to Care Direct Plus; instead, people will be able to choose which Care Direct Plus Team they require. The Care Direct number remains the same: 0345 155 1007 and will continue to be used with different telephony options to navigate the call.
Providers who already have their local CDP telephone numbers can continue to use that number.
We will also be updating our Adult Social Care pages on our website to coincide with this change.
Many of the requests we get from Providers relates to Remittance Advice, therefore we will be introducing an online remittance reprint request form. Details will also be available on your remittance advices for Adult Residential and Personal Allowance payments.
We will keep you updated when the changes have taken place.

BEAT THE HEAT: BE PREPARED FOR SUMMER HEAT WAVES
With global warming happening even faster than feared, the Met Office has warned:
- There is a 66% chance that global temperatures will exceed the 1.5C pre-industrial average for at least one of the next five years;
- There is a 98% chance that one of the next five years will be the warmest on record;
- This follows heat waves of increasing duration and intensity in recent years with temperatures recorded in England at over 40C last July with widespread ‘tropical nights’.
We will continue to issue heat wave warnings when we receive them as PEN newsflashes.
It is important all of us check our business continuity and other arrangements with the potential of longer and more intense heat waves in mind.
The Adverse Weather and Health Plan aims to protect individuals and communities from the health effects of adverse weather and to build community resilience.
This guidance provides advice for everyone on how to stay safe during hot weather. Includes a poster and leaflet.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism
In July the Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that CQC regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive training on learning disability and autism which is appropriate to the person’s role. The government’s preferred way to do this is through the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. The training is delivered as one of two Tiers and is made up of two parts.
Tier 1 is for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need. The tier 1 training structure includes eLearning and the 1 hour online interactive session co-delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person along with a facilitator.
Tier 2 is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability. The Tier 2 training structure includes the eLearning and 1 day face to face training co-delivered a person with a learning disability and an autistic person and trainer.
The eLearning is now available on eLearning for Healthcare. Devon is working with Living Options to rollout the part two training for both tier one and tier two and will be available later this year. All updates to be shared on this page.
Reminder:
Coronavirus Assurance Scheme extended to September 2023
|
The NHS and Social Care Coronavirus Life Assurance Scheme provides financial support for the families of eligible social care and health staff who died performing frontline work during the peak of the pandemic.
Through the scheme, a lump sum payment of £60,000 is made to the colleague's estate, regardless of their salary. The scheme is non-contributory, meaning there is no cost or liability to staff or employers.
Claims, in respect of deaths which occurred on or before 31 March 2022, can now be made until 30 September 2023. Employers have an active role in submitting claims and are urged to do so for the benefit of families, partners and dependants and as a way to honour their colleagues' memories.

Can you benefit from growth of the Volunteer Responders programme?
Following the success of the NHS Volunteer Responders Programme scheme during the pandemic, the Government has announced its expansion into social care to form a joint NHS and care volunteering service, allowing care providers to recruit volunteers in their local areas. Backed by £3 million, the scheme will use the GoodSAM app to bring care providers and volunteers together.
Many providers already reap the benefits of volunteering, giving their staff more time to focus on those needing the most support. Find out more from Royal Star & Garter home manager, Helen Maher, by clicking the link below.
If you would benefit from Volunteer Responders, please send use this link: https://nhscarevolunteerresponders.org/referral
We are also pleased to announce that there are two new Volunteer Responder activities on top of Check In and Chat and Vaccination site stewarding:
- Pick Up and Deliver (formerly known as NHS Transport)
- Community Response
You can currently refer in for Pick Up and Deliver. Community Response will open for referrals in the coming weeks. We will notify you when referrals open.
What is Pick Up and Deliver?
Requests can be made for volunteers to transport medication or small items of medical equipment to people’s homes from NHS sites. This activity supports people who have been newly discharged from hospital to home, are waiting for admission to hospital or are being cared for on a virtual ward. Other referrals could include the movement of small items of equipment between sites.
What is Community Response? (COMING SOON)
Community Response volunteers help with activities including collecting and delivering food shopping and essential items and / or prescriptions and medications. People being helped could include those waiting to be admitted or just discharged from hospital or people in the community needing short term support because their carer is having a break.
How do I make a referral?
Making a referral is easy through the GoodSAM portal and you can refer a person into more than one Volunteer Responder service at once creating a suitable package of support. For example, if someone is being discharged from hospital, or is at home being treated on a virtual ward, they may benefit from ‘Check-in and Chat’ telephone call and ‘Pick Up and Deliver’ to receive their medication. To find out more and make a referral, visit: https://nhscarevolunteerresponders.org/referral
Please share the following link with colleagues or people in your network that Volunteer Responders can provide support: https://nhscarevolunteerresponders.org/referral
