Thank you to everyone who’s participated in the COVID-19 Spring Booster Programme, which has gone incredibly well in Devon.
We do our best to keep the content and structure of our PEN website up-to-date in these fast-changing times and your suggestions on how to improve the website are always welcome.
Spring Booster Programme success
We have made an excellent start to the 2023 Spring Booster Programme in our Older Adult Care Homes in Devon.
Out of 373 Care Homes, 305 or 81.8% have been visited, resulting in 6,708 of the 9,672 eligible people received their booster. This represents an uptake rate of 74.2%, which makes Devon the top performer across the country, which is a significant collaborative achievement.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all providers who have worked diligently with our vaccination teams to help us reach this outstanding position in Devon. We are continuously working hard to maximise the numbers and keep the most vulnerable individuals safe, and we very much appreciate your continued support for our vaccination teams in our effort to safeguard people’s health and well-being.
If you have any residents who are eligible, where arrangements have not already been made, please contact Devon Vaccination Support.

Thank you for Community Services Review survey responses
In February Devon County Council asked to hear your views on 'Community Services', by which we mean Personal Care, Enabling and Day Services. The survey was the first part of a wider community services review; looking at the current offer and how, with the meaningful involvement of stakeholders, we shape the services moving forward.
Now that the survey has closed we wanted to thank you for the responses we received! We had a great number of Provider responses and the survey feedback was overwhelmingly thoughtful and creative. We are committed to continuing to work collaboratively with you and once we have completed reviewing all responses we’ll be in contact with an update on the next stage of the coproduction approach.
If you have any further questions or would like to be involved in this work then please contact us via the @social care business relations - mailbox with the subject header ‘Community Services review’.
World Hand Hygiene Day on 5 May
There are multiple resources via the World Health Organisation website (link attached for inclusion in a post) World Hand Hygiene Day 2023 (who.int)
They are focusing on 3 main areas this year:
- Hand hygiene - correct technique and correct time.
- Skin care- maintaining our skin is the first line of infection prevention for ourselves and nurturing our hands is an effective infection prevention measure as well as a wellbeing tool.
- Appropriate use of gloves - considering sustainability, the power of compassion and clinical assessment gained from skin to skin touch, and the necessity of conducting a risk assessment for the need of gloves depending on task to be undertaken, as well as the need to remove and replace gloves between tasks, rather than routinely wearing them as sessional care PPE.
RDE Hand Hygiene Café on Global Hand Hygiene Day
The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Exeter will be marking Global Hand Hygiene Day by linking it with their ‘Royal’ status and the celebrations of King Charles III’s Coronation. They have a variety of activities planned on Friday 5 May with an educational stand in their TLC restaurant and Community Roadshow out and about. Their on-site nursery is crafting crown and hand themed bunting for a really ‘Royal’ celebration of the day.
The Eastern Community Infection Management Service will be running two ‘Hand Hygiene Cafés’ on Friday 5 May. Staff working in Adult Social Care in Eastern and Northern Devon are invited to come together with a cuppa and share with us some hand hygiene thoughts and ideas either at 9.30am or 2.30pm on Friday 5 May. Tickets are free and can be accessed through Eventbrite on the following links:

Virtual Dementia Tour – May
We have had an overwhelming response to the fully funded Virtual Dementia Tour training available through the Health and Social Care Skills Accelerator Programme!
The Virtual Dementia Tour is the only scientifically and medically proven method of giving a person the experience of what having dementia is like. By walking in the shoes of a person with dementia, we can start to understand the issues that they experience every day. You will experience being confused, isolated, lost, intimidated, vulnerable and much more and therefore understand what you need to change to improve quality of care. By the end of this training, you will be able to recognise the issues faced by people with dementia and start to think about the provision of services to meet their needs.
Important: Please note that you if you have already signed up to the Virtual Dementia Tour, you must complete the ESF paperwork in order to secure your place and participate in the training.
