Books of Condolence for people to leave tributes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II are opening across Devon.
The Book of Condolence at County Hall will remain open to the public for the following period:
- Saturday 10 September – 9am to 5pm
- Sunday 11 September – 9am to 12 noon
- Monday 12 September through to Sunday 18 September – 9am to 5pm
The book will also be open for one further day immediately following the funeral (date yet to be confirmed).
Our Chairman, Cllr Ian Hall, was the first to sign the Book of Condolence opening at County Hall, on Topsham Road in Exeter, earlier today.
In it, he wrote:
“On behalf of Devon County Council and the people of Devon, I offer my sincere condolences to the Royal Family on the death of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth.
“The loss of our Sovereign will be felt across our county, the country and the globe.
“We thank you Ma’am for your selfless and unparalleled dedication to duty, which will serve to inspire us all.
“Faithfully, Cllr Ian Hall, Chair of Devon County Council.”
Devon’s district councils are also opening Books of Condolence for people to leave written tributes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The opening times and locations for those Books of Condolence are available on the individual district council websites.
Buckingham Palace has also opened an official Book of Condolence online.
If you wish to leave a floral tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, flowers may be laid at Exeter Cathedral on the north side lawn. Further areas have been arranged around Devon.
Please visit the website of the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon for further details.
The official announcement of the new King, King Charles III, known formally as 'The Proclamation of His Present Majesty', is cascaded nationally from London.
The national proclamation will be read first at St James's Palace, Westminster, on Saturday 10 September, with the Devon, Plymouth and Torbay proclamations on Sunday 11 September. Devon’s eight district/city/borough councils will host proclamations on Monday 12 September.
The Lord Lieutenant of Devon, as His Majesty’s representative, will be holding the official announcement of the new King, at County Hall, Exeter, at 1:05pm on Sunday 11 September. The proclamation will be read by the High Sheriff of Devon, Richard Youngman.
The outdoor ceremony will be live-streamed to enable people to watch from home or remotely, although members of the public are invited to attend in person.
More information regarding this period of mourning is available on our website, including a link to the live-stream of the proclamation, which will soon be added.
