DSLS Spring School Leadership Briefing

29 June 2022 at Exeter Racecourse

Thank you to everyone who attended the  DSLS Spring School Leadership Briefing on 29 June 2022 at Exeter Racecourse hosted by Rachel Shaw, Chair of DSLS Schools Executive Committee.

We had an excellent turnout and it was great to see so many colleagues in person once again.

The day began with a fascinating "In Conversation" session with Professor Mick Waters.  Delegates heard Mick talk about his new book "About our Schools" where he provided insights and anecdotes about the many Education Secretaries of State over the years.  We ran a raffle on the day to win a copy of Mick's book and we are delighted to confirm that we have raised £250 for Mick's charity Compassionate Education, and we would like to thank everyone who donated.

In addition to some updates from DSLS, Jackie Ross, DCC Interim Deputy and SEND Strategic Director, provided some helpful insights on the strategic direction for SEND in Devon. This, combined with the voice of PCFD (Parent Carer Forum Devon) from Victoria Mitchell and Julia Bonnell gave family  perspectives.  Delegates also had the opportunity to share their frustrations around SEND provision & processes from a schools’ perspective which Jackie Ross has noted and will factor in to the improvement plans

Paul Walker, CEO, First Federation Trustprovided a very engaging presentation offering delegates reassurance around delivering an effective curriculum in their schools.

After lunch, we were joined by Aisha Thomas, Director, Representation Matters. School leaders found Aisha's presentation incredibly thought provoking as well as helpful in terms of reflecting on the ethos and approach to diversity within their own schools and curriculum.

James Mc Neillie, Ofsted Regional Director, South West,  rounded off the day with the latest updates from Ofsted with delegates having the opportunity to ask questions.

The feedback for the whole day was overwhelmingly positive with delegates finding the sessions "informative", "refreshing", "inspiring", "honest", "impactful" and "enlightening".

Looking ahead, the date of the DSLS Autumn Briefing is 10 November 2022 at the Sandy Park Conference Centre, Exeter. The agenda and guest speakers for the day will be confirmed shortly but you can book online here.

We look forward to seeing you next time and please encourage other colleagues to come along!

Ofsted - Devon School Leadership Briefing - 29 June 2022

In the South West region, Ofsted ran some curriculum roadshows prior to the launch of EIF and one more recently in September 2021 which were very well attended by senior leaders. However, many senior leaders have commented that middle and curriculum leaders would also welcome some input from Ofsted on their research findings into the curriculum and to support their understanding of the EIF.

In light of this, Ofsted is planning to deliver a series of curriculum roadshows across each South West local authority and DSLS has offered to coordinate an event in Devon for middle and curriculum leaders. Further details will follow but in the meantime, any middle or curriculum leaders can register an interest in attending by email to: devonsls@devon.gov.uk quoting ‘Ofsted Middle Leader Curriculum Roadshow’ in the subject heading.
