Recent guidance has confirmed that those who enter an Older Person’s Care Home after 30 June will now not be eligible for further vaccination until the Autumn Booster programme begins.

Newly immunosuppressed individuals and those service users not in an Older Person’s Care home environment who have turned 75 on or before 30 June this year continue to be eligible and can book a spring booster vaccination appointment throughout the summer. Reminder: patient safety alert for hygiene products manufactured by Vernacare
Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been detected in hygiene products manufactured by Vernacare. Vernacare have issued a voluntary recall of all ‘in-date’ cosmetic products which include wet wipes, wash mitts, barrier cloths, bed bath washcloths and shampoo caps produced.
It is essential these wipes are not being used in any health and care settings. There are currently no known cases linked to these contaminated products, but it is being investigated. It is crucial to ensure relevant products are removed. There is need to raise awareness among health and care professionals who might encounter potentially associated cases to inform clinical care, surveillance and public health action.

Mandatory training about learning disability and autism for health and social care provider staff
From 1 July 2022, the Health and Care Act (see paragraph 181) requires health and social care providers registered with Care Quality Commission (CQC), to ensure that their staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism appropriate to their role. This new legal requirement follows Baroness Sheila Hollins successful amendmentin the Lords.
The CQC will issue guidance on compliance with this requirement for providers prior to DHSC consulting on and publishing a Code of Practice for the sector. This will outline the content, delivery and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, which is training the Government developed and trialled. The Government anticipates that the publication of the full Code of Practice may take at least 12 months. We understand the aspiration is for this training to be extended to further groups of staff over time.
Bite size guide to overseas recruitment
The LGA and ADASS have launched a bite size guide to overseas recruitment, developed at the request of providers in the South East Region who wished to explore and maximise opportunities that overseas recruitment offers. The guide sets out the benefits and walks employers through the resources needed, legal requirements, cost, how long it takes and how to ensure success. It also draws on real life examples from providers. While this is written for providers in England, it may be relevant to providers in other parts of the UK.
