Future meeting dates to be confirmed soon and shared in the PEN newsletter and PEN website.

Call for agency staff COVID-19 vaccination data

A big thank you to care colleagues for your contributions to the Capacity Tracker. This vital data source helps the Department of Health and Social Care reflect the needs of the care workforce in policy decisions and identify areas needing more support.

Social care recruitment agencies have highlighted that reported COVID-19 vaccination rates for agency workers may be lower than actual rates among this group. When providing updates, please make sure agency staff are part of your calculation or, if you do not employ any, answer the relevant question with 'zero'.

Having robust data on agency workers' vaccination status will help us support them more effectively during the next round of vaccines.

From DHSC 17.6.22

Vaccine uptake in general population from NICE

Important message for Care Homes who participated in the NHSX iPad support Offer

During the pandemic NHSX gifted iPads to care homes so that staff could access remote health consultations and wellbeing services for the people in their care, and to help keep residents connected to their loved ones.  On 30th June 2022 the Mobile Device Management (MDM) service used to support the iPads will come to an end.

Since March 2022 care homes have been receiving communication by email and daily notifications on their iPad to ask them to choose the next steps for their device; this is the latest FAQ for the iPad support offer with important information on the next steps Care Homes in receipt of an iPad need to take: the most important message is: if you want to be able to continue using your iPad, you need to accept the reset command during the first week of July.  Full details and contact information for any issues are included in the FAQ document.

Why care home staff in the UK are at breaking point

Our ongoing research (the results of which are not yet published) looks at the financial impact COVID has had on care homes for older people and their staff. We interviewed managers, care-giving staff and support staff from for-profit and non-for-profit providers of all sizes. We have found that many people don’t (replace with do not)think carers need more training – they are, as some reminded us, among the best trained workforce in the economy. What they do need is improved working conditions and better pay.

The social care reform which the government has begun to implement comes nowhere near resolving this crisis. It is clear that spending more on staff will benefit everyone – service users, service providers, workers, and, ultimately, the taxpayer.
