We hope you had a wonderful Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, and that those of you who were working over the break also managed to get some time off to celebrate or take a well-deserved rest.

We do our best to keep the content and structure of our PEN website up-to-date in these fast-changing times and your suggestions on how to improve the website are always welcome.

Trainee Registered Nursing Associates September 2022 intake

Registered Nursing Associates (RNAs) – what are they?

RNAs are hands-on, skilled nursing staff, often with a background in the care industry, who bridge the gap between Healthcare Support Workers and the Registered Nurse. They work within a multi-disciplinary team and provide clinical skills and assessment that unregistered staff cannot undertake, and therefore improve client wellbeing and clinical outcomes.

The benefits of taking on RNAs include:

  • Improved Staff retention rates with investment into career pathways and increased job satisfaction.
  • Immediate clinical decision making on hand for residents from a Registered RNA, rather than relying on external RNs visiting.
  • Investment in the progression of being able to manage residents with higher complex needs and the ability serve a wider market of potential residents.
  • Fewer long-term costs than staffing with Registered Nurses

Find out more about RNAs here.

DCC and Plymouth Marjon University are also hosting a 3 week remote ‘bridging programme’ for trainee RNAs to help their move into Higher Education. To find out more contact Jennifer Lunnon, Adult Social Care Nursing Lead by emailing jennifer.lunnon@devon.gov.uk or ringing 07890 382843.

Care Home resident iPad Closedown by 30 June

In winter 2020 NHSX delivered 11,000 iPads to care homes across England that had limited access to technology. This was to support video calls, when Covid-19 safety concerns meant care home residents were unable to see family members and friends in person.

On 30 June 2022, centrally funded support for Mobile Device Management software on the NHSX iPads will end. This means that the NHS will no longer control the settings on those iPads.

Since March 2022, NHSTD has reached out to all care providers who have NHSTD iPads to let them know about their options. This change is about who manages the software on the iPads, and no care home will have their iPad removed. Care homes can ask to move their iPad to another care home in their area, but this is the choice of the care home that owns the iPad.

A Next steps FAQ has been produced to support the care homes throughout the transitioning period. If you have any questions please email england.ipad.offer@nhs.net

Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service offers a free home safety visit service to help make everyone safer from the risk of fire

Have you or someone you care for had a home safety visit?

The friendly fire safety advisers will come into the home and identify and assess any fire risks and provide fire safety equipment where needed. They will also advise on escape routes and what to do in the event of a fire.

A working smoke alarm is a vital start when it comes to protecting from fire. We will check and replace any alarms needed.

For people with additional needs or disabilities, we can provide a more specialised kit, such as sensory loss alarms which come with a strobe light and a vibrating pad. We can also supply fire retardant bedding, throws or blankets, carbon monoxide alarms, alarm testers and run-down timers.

Please contact us to get a home safety visit booked in.

Call 0800 0502 999 or refer online at www.dsfire.gov.uk/homesafety
