Vacancy  |  Devon SLS Primary Education Trustee (voluntary)

Are you ready for a new challenge? Are you passionate about education and have the willingness to devote the necessary time and effort? Are you ready to apply and share your professional skills in a rewarding voluntary capacity?

We are looking to appoint a Primary Education Trustee, preferably with experience in Early Years, to actively contribute to the Board’s strategic direction and be an advocate for the organisation.

Devon Schools Leadership Services (Devon SLS) is an exciting new charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) that launched in September 2020 for the benefit of school leaders, following the merger of Devon’s former DAPH and DASH phase associations.

Our Motivating Drivers are to:

  • Be the voice of and support for school leadership in the south-west.
  • Become the conduit for school leadership and school improvement.
  • Proactively address the needs of leaders to ultimately benefit learners.
  • Become a self-sustaining, not for profit organisation

Read about our mission, vision, values and guiding principles on the Devon SLS website.

The Board structure comprises of a Chair, Treasurer, up to eight appointed trustees and the Business and Operations Manager and collectively, they hold the charity ‘in trust’ for current/future beneficiaries and achieve its Object by:

  • ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
  • being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its ‘corporate’ behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
  • ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.

What is the role of a Primary Education Trustee?

To be a trustee of an organisation is an exciting and fulfilling role, and the most effective Boards are ones which benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, skill sets and experiences. The core purpose of the Primary Education Trustee is to:

  • fulfil the role of representing the strategic voice for schools on the Board of Trustees.
  • ensure that all relevant Phase specific issues are central to the Devon SLS strategic planning through membership and representation on the Schools Executive Committee (SEC).
  • work closely with all Board member remits and with the Schools Executive Committee in a mutually complementary way.

Applications are welcome from serving Headteachers or CEOs drawn from subscribing schools/Trusts and also non-serving Headteachers e.g. retirees.

What is the commitment?

In terms of time commitment, Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings which are typically held 5 times a year within normal business hours. Additionally, Education Trustees attend Schools Executive Committee meetings on a rotational basis (3 per year). Most meetings are for a 2-hour duration.

It’s an exciting opportunity to help shape the future direction of Devon SLS and provide you with further personal and professional development.

If you want to add working as a Charity Trustee to your professional portfolio and help advance education for the public benefit by supporting teaching and learning, leadership and community engagement in schools throughout Devon and South West England, then this could be for you. Note that this role is voluntary.
