Welcome introduction from the Chair

Judith Johnson

Devon Schools Leadership Services (Devon SLS)

Welcome back to the new academic year for schools. I sincerely hope that you all managed some much needed rest and recuperation after the significant challenges faced last term. You return to a changed landscape on many fronts…

Judith Johnson

The long standing and successful Phase Associations of DASH and DAPH have now transitioned into the new organisation of Devon Schools Leadership Services (Devon SLS), in the form of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). I have the honour of being the first chairperson of its Strategic Board and will work hard for you to ensure that we keep all the positive benefits from DAPH and DASH, whilst embracing the future with new products and services to meet your needs as leaders of maintained schools, academies and MATs.

Covid-19 is obviously still very much with us and its implications for your school structures and internal organisation, leadership of staff, and innovation in curriculum delivery. Devon SLS can provide support for you (practical and emotional) throughout this time with information, signposting, events and access to colleagues such as our Professional Partners and the ‘aHead’ service offer.

I want to pay tribute to the outcomes for schools that DAPH and DASH have achieved in the past and to the dedication of their various Chairs of the Phase Associations recent and past. Without their foundations Devon SLS could not exist from such a position of strength. The challenge of combining that role with running a school or a series of schools in a MAT is still with us - in Devon SLS we have 4 serving Headteachers or CEOs on the Strategic Board with a portfolio remit for Education, who will continue to ensure that school leaders’ needs are met through the new Devon SLS. In addition, our key operational vehicle – the Schools Executive Committee (SEC), is solely composed of serving Headteachers or MAT CEOs, who continue to balance the day job as well as support the educational leadership in Devon at the system level. You will be hearing from them in their work with Area Meetings, at conferences and events, and through the consultative/representative work on behalf of Devon County Council, that they (and many of you reading this) will be supporting over the year ahead.

We are united in our collective ambition to become a first class service - for schools, with schools, and by schools. Our infrastructure will not significantly increase - we have just 2 employed staff which will extend marginally with part time administrative support. Our offer to you will keep children at the forefront of all that we provide by using skilled and active practitioners, and brokerage to ensure you get value for money, with support that has currency, and meets your needs.

Covid has reminded us all of what’s truly important for our learners – let’s not lose sight of that in the months ahead. Devon SLS intends to actively live our values and we look forward to sharing the journey with you all.
