You can adopt campaign poster

There are 109 children in the South West waiting for adoptive families, including 46 sibling groups of two or more children.

Research shows that lots of people have considered adoption, or would consider adopting in the future, but only 25% believed they would be eligible to in the South West.

We're part of a new nationwide campaign, which launched today, aimed at dispelling myths around who can adopt and explore what the process involves, so more people feel confident taking the first steps towards adopting a child.

People can adopt from a variety of backgrounds, including single parents, people from all religions, people from the LGBTQ+ community and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.

The adoption process has changed over the years; it is simpler and quicker than it has been previously and there is a lot more support available.

A new film featuring adoptive families has been released as part of the campaign alongside a podcast series featuring a number of famous voices talking about adoption.

Kath Drescher from Adopt South West says:

"There are children all across the South West looking for loving homes, from young children to older children, from single children to sibling groups, no matter their background, all they need is their forever family to change their life. We want children who haven’t had an equal start in life to have an equal chance in life.

"Love, time and commitment to a child are three of the most important attributes you can have to adopt a child.

"And barriers to adopting? There are actually very few. It’s more to do with a person’s natural ability, their personal skills, making sure they can provide a safe and loving home. It’s not about race, religion, sexual identity, marital status, or whether they own their own home.

"There is a thorough process – there has to be, of course – but it’s not as difficult or onerous as people first think. And there is plenty of ongoing support, from our service and support from other adopters.

"Adoption can be uniquely fulfilling. There’s no doubt that it’s hard work – any parent will tell you that – but it’s so rewarding."
