FREE Schools Health and Wellbeing survey (SHEU) – Autumn 2019

Schools are invited to take part in this year’s free School Health and Wellbeing survey, being organised by the School Health Education Unit (SHEU) during the Autumn term 2019. The survey can help schools better understand the experiences, behaviours and perceptions of their pupils in relation to their physical and emotional health and well-being.

Pupils’ health and well-being affects both their academic potential and their future life chances, therefore insight into these aspects can support you to plan effective personal, health and social development for your pupils and enhance their readiness to learn.

Each school taking part will receive their own report summarising anonymised data from their pupils, compared with the wider Devon data. The survey results can support many purposes, for example, helping target work with pupils, providing evidence for OFSTED inspections, and helping support plans for teaching mandatory relationships education/RSE and health education from September 2020. We will be inviting schools to participate again in two years’ time, so you will be able to baseline and track pupils’ responses over time.

There are two ways to take part; either online within school or through a school-based paper questionnaire. The survey is aimed at years 4 and 6 in primary schools and years 8 and 10 in secondary schools. Special schools and pupil referral units can also take part.

If your school would like to take part, please email publichealth-mailbox@devon.gov.uk by 19th July. If you need more information, please contact Rachel Humphries in Public Health on (01392) 386382 or via email rachel.humphries@devon.gov.uk.

Ofsted Blog | 'Ask Listen Do'

Nick Whittaker, HMI, Specialist Adviser, SEND

For a child or young person, having special educational needs and/or a disability (SEND) means that they and their families will come into contact with many different organisations, services and professionals. The journey may include diagnosis and the search for help and advice (perhaps an education, health and care plan), and last through the child’s school life and into adulthood.

One of the organisations offering families help through this sometimes confusing landscape is NHS England. They have introduced their ‘Ask Listen Do’ initiative, which supports families of children with autism and learning disabilities  |  READ MORE
