Ambassador story - Helena Banks - Senior Social Worker

Helena

I began working in social care by volunteering at a local respite centre for children with learning disabilities. I have always been aware of the often ‘hidden’ world of learning disabilities because of my brother who has learning disabilities and autism, and this drove me to pursue a career working with people with learning disabilities.

I had so much fun in that role, supporting the children to have discos in the sensory room and going for trips out to the beach, but I found myself wondering what would happen to the children when they were older. This led me to start looking into the role of an adult social worker and looking at all the ways we can support adults with learning disabilities to live the best lives possible.

I love working in social care as every day is completely different. You get to be creative, problem solve and face challenges that really make you reflect. It can be hard but also very rewarding, you really make a tangible difference to people’s lives. I think I would be bored in any other kind of job!
