Proud to Care Ambassadors' newsletter - issue 9

Proud to Care Devon

Issue number 9

Welcome to our summer newsletter!

Introduction

Working Orsa

Come along to our next development event in Exeter for existing and new Ambassadors; we hope it will be an informative and fun morning with several speakers including Sonya, who will be telling us about Orsa’s role as a therapy dog! To book your place please email ProudtoCare@devon.gov.uk.

We will soon be starting an exciting project with Skills for Care to expand the Ambassador service, to offer people the opportunity to access workplace career activities including work experience, shadowing, guided visits, etc.  If you can offer workplace activities in your organisation and would like more information or you want to get involved, please email ProudtoCare@devon.gov.uk

The Department of Health and Social Care will be running a national adult social care recruitment campaign later this year. They want to hear from everyone who works in adult social care to get your feedback, which will help to shape the design and delivery of the campaign. Have your say by completing this short 10 minute survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ProudtoCare2018/

Ambassador story

John Powell

In the newsletter we will now be sharing Ambassador stories, John from Unicare is our first Ambassador to tell us about his journey in health and care. Do you have a story to share? We’d love to hear from you for future editions. Please contract Tracy at ProudtoCare@devon.gov.uk

John Powell, Managing Director, Unicare Devon

I was brought up in Berkshire on a rough estate that became victim to drugs and crime.  I lost friends to drug addiction and suicide and that was my turning point.  I moved away and became an estate agent and doorman and after a decade or so I found myself in Devon with 2 beautiful children.  I gave up both jobs and began working at the RD&E as an auxiliary nurse.  Working on the emergency medical unit and A&E made me realise that I do care and making those final moments in someone’s life better is special.

Over the next year I researched what was needed to start my own company.  I would often be found in my free time with Alfie, my youngest son, in one hand and my laptop in the other, writing my policies and procedures that we still use as the backbone at Unicare Devon since 2010.  As a result, I now ensure 100 service users are looked after and, just as important, 40 people work with me and have enough money to support their families.

I left school at 15 with no qualifications or prospects, look at me now, this industry doesn’t just give you a job, it gives you a career, and that is why I am Proud to Care!
