Regional Stakeholder Reception

On Thursday 2 February BEIS hosted the first in a series of regional stakeholder receptions bringing together influential leaders from across London and the South East.

The event at the Institute of Directors’ headquarters provided a great opportunity for Secretary of State Greg Clark, with Ministers Jo Johnson and Nick Hurd, to engage with prominent stakeholders as the department continues to consult on the Industrial Strategy Green Paper.


New and expectant mothers ensured sufficient protections from redundancy

The government has committed to making sure new and expectant mothers have sufficient protections from redundancy in the workplace.

In a response to a report by the Women and Equalities Select Committee on pregnancy and maternity discrimination, BEIS said it will consult in due course on the options.

ESA plans second Tim Peake space mission

Greg Clark confirmed that Tim Peake will make a second mission to the International Space Station to continue work on scientific research and broadening our understanding of the space environment.

  • The space sector is driving growth and skills across the UK as part of the government’s industrial strategy
  • New STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) education centre is opened at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage.
  • £70 million funding for UK space businesses to expand work on satellite monitoring of the environment and other global issues
  • UK commits €1.4 billion to the European Space Agency (ESA) over next 4 years.

New energy reforms help more people stay warm

Terraced houses

Changes to the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) will ensure energy companies provide the necessary support to people struggling to meet their heating bills.

The reforms which were consulted on last year will usher in a simplified scheme, with energy companies required to provide struggling households with free energy efficiency measures to make their homes warmer and bring their bills down.

Independent review into the strategic role of tidal lagoons

Earlier in January the Hendry Review published its report on the strategic role of tidal lagoons in the UK.

The Review into the feasibility and practicality of tidal lagoon energy was commissioned in February 2016 to assess:

  • whether, and in what circumstances, tidal lagoons could play a cost effective role as part of the UK energy mix
  • the potential scale of opportunity in the UK and internationally, including supply chain opportunities
  • a range of possible structures for financing tidal lagoons
  • different sizes of projects as the first of a kind;
  • whether a competitive framework could be put in place for the delivery of tidal lagoon projects.

Greg Clark commended the hard work of Mr Hendry and his team, and will now consider the recommendations and the issues arising in detail.

Acas and GEO launch new guidance on gender pay reporting to help 8,000 large businesses.

The legislation requires employers with 250 or more employees to publish statutory calculations every year, showing how large the pay gap is between their male and female employees.
