Temporary home for museum

You're invited to come and explore Buxton Museum and Art Gallery once again as it opens the doors to its new home.

Buxton Museum temporary home 2026

It opened in its interim home last week, with an official opening event planned for Thursday 22 October.

The museum and art gallery, known as BMAG, now has its own dedicated building next to the town’s library on Kents Bank Road with space to showcase its collections, host exhibitions and welcome visitors while work continues to find it a permanent home.

As well as the displays of artefacts and artwork, including the famous Buxton Bear, the space will support a wider programme of events, educational activities, school visits and community engagement. There will also be a gift shop. Admission is free.

The museum and art gallery closed at its former home in Peak Buildings, Terrace Road, due to structural concerns in the building in 2023.

Cat & Fiddle opens early

Cat and Fiddle

The A54 Macclesfield Main Road, known locally as the Cat and Fiddle, opened on Monday 12 October almost three weeks earlier than originally planned.

Good weather, careful planning and excellent progress by teams working on site meant the first phase of the £3 million programme of repairs and improvement on a 1.7km stretch of the route was completed well ahead of schedule.

The road was closed to all traffic so extensive work, including major excavations across the full width of the road, could be carried out safely.

Bag a bargain

Calling all bargain hunters! A new re-use shop has opened in our household waste recycling centre at Waterswallows near Buxton.

The shop has been set up and will be operated in partnership with Suez UK which operates the recycling centre on our behalf.

From furniture and homeware to garden equipment, books, CDs and vinyl, there’s a host of pre-loved items ready for a new home – so why not pop along to the centre on Waterswallows Road and bag yourself a deal. It's a cashless shop so please pay by card or with your phone.

The shop's open from 9am to 4pm every Wednesday to Sunday, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Proceeds go towards running costs with any profits going to local charities.

Re-use shop's charity boost

Profits from our re-use shop at Bolsover Household Waste Recycling Centre are being ploughed back into local communities with the launch of a new scheme offering grants of up to £2,500 for charitable causes.

Sales from the shop raised more than £20,000 in the 12 months from April 2025. And along with HW Martin, who run the site, we've agreed to donate all of the profits to local community groups and organisations across Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) is administering the fund, with groups able to apply online for grants of between £500 and £2,500. The scheme closes on 23 October 2026. Find out about eligibility criteria and how to apply.

Take our library survey

Derbyshire library libraries

If you use our library service we'd like you to take part in a customer satisfaction survey.

We're asking questions about which libraries you use, how often, what services you need and how satisfied you are with what we offer.

It won't take long and you can complete it online or in person at a local branch. It closes on Sunday 25 October.

It's about children

holiday activity children park play

Thousands of children and young people are benefiting from free holiday activities and healthy meals with our It's About Me programme.

It's About Me, one of England's largest Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programmes, provides eligible children with free holiday clubs, healthy meals and enriching activities.

HAF award winner

Delivered by StreetGames on our behalf, it supported 17,380 children through 257 holiday clubs last year, providing 78,764 meals with the help of 82 local organisations.

Its success has now been recognised nationally, with Stonebroom HAF lead Gail Morton named Regional Volunteer of the Year at the HAF awards in London.

MenB vaccine

Young people can now get a free MenB vaccination to help protect against meningococcal B disease, a serious bacterial infection that can lead to life-threatening meningitis and sepsis.

Men B

You may be eligible if you:

  • Were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008.
  • Are under 25 years old (born on or after 21 July 2001) and are starting higher education for the first time, or beginning a residential further education course, in autumn 2026.

Meningococcal disease can develop quickly and become very serious. Students living in halls of residence or shared accommodation are at a higher risk because the bacteria can spread through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing and kissing.

Getting vaccinated before you start your course can help protect both you and those around you. The vaccine is given as two doses, at least 28 days apart.

Tobacco and vapes law change

We're reminding businesses that selling tobacco products, herbal smoking products, cigarette papers, vaping and nicotine products via vending machines will be banned from Thursday 29 October.

It will also be illegal to sell any vaping or nicotine product to anyone under the age of 18. It will be an offence for an adult aged 18 or over to buy, or attempt to buy, these products for someone under 18.

Businesses found flouting the new rules in the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 after they come into force risk a fixed penalty notice of £200.

Our Trading Standards officers are encouraging retailers to get in touch if they need more detailed advice or guidance. Read more about Trading Standards advice for businesses.

Listening to our residents

We're improving services in response to residents' feedback, helping reduce the issues that may lead to complaints.

Measures outlined in our annual Complaints, Compliments and Feedback Report, discussed by our Cabinet last week (Thursday 15 October), are already in place and making a difference, with improved response times on complaints and a reduction in the number of complaints upheld overall.

The report highlights the scale of demand on council services, with around 20,000 calls to Call Derbyshire each month and more than 90,000 highways enquiries a year. In 2025/26 we received 2,214 complaints, while residents also submitted 1,002 compliments recognising good service across departments.
