Growing future talent

More than 30 new apprentices have started their careers with us as part of our Apprenticeship Programme 2026.

apprentices apprenticeships

The 36 apprentices will support a wide range of council services including highways, finance, business support and catering, while developing skills, gaining qualifications and building workplace experience.

The new starters will follow nationally recognised training programmes delivered by approved training providers, lasting between 15 months and three years.

An induction event was held at County Hall, Matlock, for the apprentices to learn more about the council's values, the support available to them and the opportunities ahead. They also took part in an outdoor pursuits and team-building day at Lea Green Learning and Development Centre. Activities included low ropes courses, archery, bushcraft and orienteering.

Support for children with SEND

Simon Mabbott on SEND

We're working to provide more local, joined-up support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Our Cabinet Member for SEND and Education, Councillor Simon Mabbott (right), has made a video explaining how we're improving the service so that it works even more closely with children, families, schools and other professionals.

Helping residents stay warm

Residents facing fuel poverty and financial hardship could get support with their energy costs.

We've approved a grant of up to £345,000 from the government's Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) to Marches Energy Advice (MEA).

This will provide energy relief crisis payments and pre-payment energy vouchers to residents struggling to afford their energy bills.

The funding, available until 31 March 2029, forms part of Derbyshire's wider Crisis and Resilience Fund programme, which is helping low-income households across the county manage the impact of rising living costs and build longer-term financial resilience.

Be a school governor

Could you be a school governor? We're hoping to recruit new governors for schools across Derbyshire to work with head teachers and help drive up standards in schools.

school governors meeting business

Experience of teamwork and some knowledge of business management is useful, but applicants don’t need any special skills or training.

You don’t have to have worked in a school or even be a parent – you just need to be aged 18 or over and have an enthusiastic interest in our children’s futures.

Becoming a governor is the perfect opportunity if you're looking to skill-up for a career change, for retired people wanting a new interest or missing a challenge, plus something that would look great on a CV.

Have your say on byway

Bamford Clough

If you use Bamford Clough, whether you're a local resident, walker, cyclist, horse rider or 4x4 enthusiast, we're inviting you to have your say on proposed changes aimed at improving safety on Derbyshire's steepest byway.

We're introducing an 18-month Experimental Traffic Order which will make the route, in the Peak District National Park, one-way uphill for motor vehicles. We'll use the trial to gather feedback from residents and user groups. The measures will remain in place until March 2028 and are intended to address safety concerns on the steep, narrow route.

Have your say by emailing theclough.etro@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Quit smoking for good

Are you a smoker? Want to quit? Why not join thousands of others taking their first steps towards a smoke-free future?

stoptober LLBD

Giving up smoking can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Circulation starts to improve within weeks, and after one year smoke-free, the risk of having a heart attack is around half that of a smoker. The likelihood of developing smoking-related cancers and lung disease also reduces over time.

Throughout October, the Live Life Better Derbyshire team will be attending a variety of community events and health and wellbeing sessions, offering advice, information and referrals to our free stop smoking service.

Tackling business crime

A major new partnership is helping businesses strengthen their resilience to crime and anti-social behaviour. Through the Business Crime Reduction Partnership, businesses can work with police to tackle the crimes affecting them.

Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts and East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward have launched the partnership with a series of free events, giving businesses the opportunity to hear expert insights, discuss key challenges and receive updates from Derbyshire Constabulary.

The first free event, which is set to take place on Tuesday 3 November from 12.30pm to 4.30pm at Casa Hotel, Chesterfield, is open to all Derbyshire businesses and includes a networking lunch.

Places are limited, please register.
