Our brand new school in South Derbyshire opened the doors to its first pupils this week.
Councillor Simon Mabbott, our Cabinet Member for SEND and Education, got to see behind the scenes before they arrived at Drakelow Park Flying High Academy.
With the latest technology and facilities for the local community to use, it will eventually provide places for 420 pupils in bright, modern surroundings.
Funded by contributions from property developers, the primary school has been built at no cost to the council.
Among its features are a two-storey hall which the community can use, and an all-weather sports pitch.

If you use our household waste recycling centres remember to register before we bring in a new system to prevent the centres being used by people living outside of the county.
You must register your vehicle in advance and carry identification from 28 September 2026, to show you live in Derbyshire.

Each Derbyshire resident over the age of 17 can register up to two vehicles.
If you're registering a van to dispose of your household waste, you'll have to register each time you wish to visit. This is to help deter traders from using the service for free at the expense of local council taxpayers. Traders wishing to dispose of trade waste can pay to do so at recycling centres in Ashbourne and Stonegravels (between 8.30-9.30am and 5-6pm) and can make an unlimited number of visits.

When Robyn Riggans first came to Bennerley – one of our new community support bed-only units – she wasn’t able to walk.
She’d been seriously ill in hospital and there were fears she wouldn’t survive. Thankfully, she did, and with the guidance of our supportive care staff and NHS physios from Derbyshire Community Health Services (DCHS), her recovery progressed remarkably.
Bennerley, in Cotmanhay, is part of our newly established social care and health partnership with DCHS called Community First (County). It is one of three units, alongside Staveley Centre and Thomas Fields in Buxton, which support even more people to leave hospital when they’re ready

We're calling on the Government to reconsider proposals to remove the A38 Derby Junctions scheme from the national road investment programme.
Economic growth, new homes and jobs across Derbyshire could be put at risk if the Government drops the plans, says Council Leader Councillor Alan Graves.
The scheme would upgrade the heavily congested Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton junctions, where local journeys and long-distance traffic converge, causing regular delays and unreliable journey times.
Cancellation without a credible, fully funded alternative would leave longstanding transport pressures unresolved and could constrain planned development, business growth and future investment.

The Derbyshire Food Partnership Stakeholder Engagement Event on Tuesday 8 September brought together representatives from community organisations, businesses, the NHS, local authorities and other partners to share ideas and discuss the challenges in accessing healthy food, and to explore opportunities to work together to improve the local food system across the county.
We hope that partners will join us in creating a Derbyshire Food Partnership and transform the way we work together to strengthen Derbyshire’s vibrant food system.

Calling all parents of Year 6 children – you can now apply for your child’s secondary school place for September 2027.
The deadline to submit applications to us is midnight on Saturday 31 October 2026.
Applying online is the most efficient method and also allows our school admissions team to most effectively receive and gather the information it requires to allocate places.
Anyone who applies online will receive an email to assure them their application has been received.
If your child has an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) their school place will be arranged by our SEND Assessment Service (SENDAS). For queries, parents should speak to their SENDCO in school or visit Derbyshire Local Offer.

During Falls Prevention Awareness Week (Mon 21 to Friday 25 September) we're stressing that falls should not be seen as an inevitable part of growing older.
Our community-based falls prevention exercise programme – Live Stronger for Longer – supports people who may be at a greater risk of falling by helping them improve their strength, balance and confidence. Live Stronger for Longer is delivered by Age UK Derby and Derbyshire.

Cabinet Members at Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council will be asked to consider recommendations to withdraw from a long-running project to fix and bring a waste treatment centre into use at their respective Cabinet meetings next week (Wednesday 23 September 2026).
Following a comprehensive review, officers from both councils are recommending that the best option to protect the interests of council tax-payers is to decommission and dispose of the Derby and Derbyshire Waste Treatment Centre in Sinfin and seek alternative longer-term arrangements for the disposal of the city and county’s household waste.

Available to workplaces across Derbyshire (excluding Derby city), the service is free for both employers and employees. Businesses simply need to provide a suitable space and register their interest, with the NHS Health Check team taking care of the rest.
The checks include blood pressure, cholesterol and body measurements, helping identify risks linked to conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Early awareness can help people make positive lifestyle changes or access support before more serious health problems develop.
