Pothole backlog cut

We're making great progress on reducing the number of potholes in Derbyshire, thanks to new, innovative repair methods resulting in safer, more resilient roads.

road machine

We've cut the number of outstanding potholes from 12,000 in April to under 700, which is the lowest figure recorded for more than 12 months. That’s a reduction of 93.75% in just four months.

This achievement is testament to the commitment and continued investment of our rapid response service, as we prioritise the delivery of longer-lasting repairs that give the right roads the right treatment first time, every time.

Since April, we've spent £3.9 million on pothole repairs as part of the wider highways £70 million capital programme, which prepares the county’s roads for winter.

Next steps help after exams

Have any youngsters in your family just got their A-level results? Or about to get GCSE results this week? Remind them there is help out there so they can make informed decisions on their next steps.

Students receiving their exam results

Receiving results can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.

Whatever the outcome, there is plenty of free support and advice available to help young people explore their options, from further education and apprenticeships to training and employment opportunities.

Our team of Youth Employment Support (YES) advisors will be running free drop-in sessions across the county later this month, offering guidance and support to anyone unsure about their next steps.

Click the 'find out more' button below to find out where support is available and explore the different options open to young people after results day.

Best start in life

If you live in Birdholme or Cotmanhay and have young children, exciting changes are on the way to help give your family the best start.

Birdholme Best Start Family Hub

Families will soon begin to see improvements at their local children's centres at Birdholme and Cotmanhay as they prepare to become Derbyshire's first Best Start Family Hubs.

The new hubs are designed to make it easier for families with young children to access support, information and services all in one place.

Building on the support already available through children's centres, the hubs will offer activities, advice and guidance from pregnancy through to starting school.

Alongside the new community hubs, families will also be able to access information and support through a growing online hub.

Biting back at loan sharks

We're supporting Operation SharkNet by holding a series of drop-ins to offer advice about the risks of loan sharks and illegal lending – and how to borrow safely.

Operation SharkNet  is a week of action against loan sharks and illegal money lenders and runs from Monday 24 August to Friday 28 August.

Throughout the week, our affordable credit team will be out and about across Derbyshire running sessions at a variety of locations, including libraries, food banks, a leisure centre and a hospital. See times and dates.

They’ll be talking about safe, affordable alternatives for borrowing money including community banks and credit unions.

If you're concerned about a loan shark, you can call Stop Loan Sharks on 0300 555 2222 at any time of the day or night.

If you do need to borrow money but can't access mainstream lending, find out about local community banks which offer safer borrowing options.

Winter fuel scams

It might seem a bit odd to talk about winter fuel scams when we're experiencing such warm weather. But last year, criminals targeted UK adults between August and October, and this year is likely to be no different.

winter fuel scams

Remember, most Winter Fuel Payments are made automatically.

You shouldn't need to apply, and you'll never be asked to provide personal or banking details by text message or email.

Criminals often target people who may be less confident dealing with unexpected texts, emails, or phone calls. They exploit confusion by sending fake "apply now" texts and emails.

Mental health services: have your say

There's still time to share your views on how well our mental health services currently work or what can be improved.

Hands

We provide three services for people with ‘low levels’ of need who don’t require crisis support or hospital admission and we’re running a public consultation into them.

The services are designed to help people live independently in their communities and are practical and community based. They include talking to someone, getting help with housing or budgeting and building routines and confidence.

These services don’t provide clinical treatment or counselling and are different from specialist NHS mental health services, for example GP or community mental health teams.

Give your views by completing our online questionnaire by Sunday 23 August.

MenB vaccinations

If you know a school leaver or university student, let them know they can get protection against meningococcal B disease (MenB) which can cause meningitis and sepsis, through a one-off vaccination programme.

menB vaccination meningococcal B disease

Following recent outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease in England, the MenB vaccine is being offered to:

  • all those of school-leaving age
  • those aged under 25 starting at university for the first time
  • those aged under 25 and starting further education for the first time who will be living in college accommodation or college halls of residence this autumn.

The MenB vaccine protects against most strains of MenB found in the UK that can cause meningococcal meningitis (dangerous inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), which can lead to life-threatening septicaemia (blood poisoning).

Importantly, you need two doses to be protected against the disease. Find out how to book here: Book a MenB vaccination appointment - NHS
