Book lovers in communities across Derbyshire are set to benefit as the county’s mobile library service welcomes two new vans which have hit the road this month.
 The new mobile library vans will be more reliable, cost-effective and efficient to run. Their smaller size also makes them more agile, enabling them to travel along narrower rural roads and reach even more readers and communities.
The new vans replaced two older HGVs that were in poor condition and frequently needed repairs. Drivers no longer need an HGV licence, making recruitment much easier.

The mobile service has added 30 new stops and will deliver to 179 stops in 139 towns, villages and communities across the county – from Tintwistle to Netherseal and Earl Sterndale to Pleasley.

One of our biggest priorities in Derbyshire is to ensure we have the safest, most resilient roads.
That’s why part of our £70 million capital programme will see us invest £7.3 million resurfacing 69 roads in the county this year.
Resurfacing is the most complex and expensive treatment we give our roads, giving them a new lease of life for around 20 more years.

However, it’s not possible for us to resurface every route in the county because of the amount of money and time it costs. Instead, we prioritise those nearing the end of their life and use other methods to ensure we're using the right treatment, for the right roads, first time every time.

When Robyn Riggans first came to Bennerley Care Centre – one of our new community support bed-only units – she wasn’t able to walk.
She’d been seriously ill in hospital and there were fears she wouldn’t survive. Thankfully, she did, but the road to recovery is a long one.
With the guidance of supportive staff and physios at the Cotmanhay care centre, Robyn's recovery progressed remarkably.

Did you know that under-19s in Derbyshire get free bus travel this August? So if you're planning a trip by bus, check if your bus operator is taking part.
East Midlands Mayor Mayor Claire Ward is funding free bus travel for 16 to 18-year-olds throughout August, building on the Government’s Great British
Summer Savings offer for children aged five to 15. Together, this means all under-19s can travel for free on participating local bus
services during the summer holidays.
Children aged five to 15 can simply hop on board participating local services. Young people aged 16 to 18 should bring proof of age and check their bus operator’s website before travelling. A valid b_line card will be accepted.

Could you spare a few hours at rugby or football games in Derbyshire to help make a difference as part of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD)?
You'll greet fans arriving for matches and hand out WSPD Z-Cards. The cards include the club’s fixtures and mental health and suicide prevention information inside. Some fans will stop for a chat about mental health; most will thank you and proceed to the match.
You don't need experience, just enthusiasm and a willingness to support an important community event. You're welcome to volunteer at as many matches as you like and, after volunteering, you can stay and watch the game for free if you wish.
WSPD itself is on Thursday 10 September but games you can volunteer at take place throughout the county during August, September and October.
The matches are a fantastic opportunity to get involved, meet others, raise awareness of suicide prevention and help create opportunities for conversations that could save lives.
Major repairs are now under way on Harrington Bridge in Sawley, helping to preserve this important River Trent crossing.
The work forms part of our £70 million capital programme, which is improving highways and infrastructure across Derbyshire to make them safer, stronger and more resilient.
We’re investing £760,000 this year in the final phase of a £1.4 million refurbishment project for the 116-year-old bridge, which carries the B6540 Tamworth Road over the River Trent.
The improvements are expected to continue until Friday 27 November 2026. To help keep disruption to a minimum, the road will remain open to traffic for most of the project. Some temporary lane closures will be needed, along with three overnight weekend closures later in the programme. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained throughout the year.
