We don't need to tell you how hot the weather is right now, but we do have some advice about staying safe during extreme heat.
 Make sure you, your family and friends are aware of the information that's available to keep you safe, such as:
- Drink plenty of water.
- Avoid being out in the sun when it's at its hottest, usually between 11am and 3pm.
- Regularly apply sunscreen, factor 30+.
- Wear lightweight clothing, a hat and UV sunglasses.
- Never leave children or animals in a closed vehicle.
One of the most important pieces of advice is to be aware of the dangers of open water. It's so tempting – it looks cool and refreshing. But it could endanger your life.
 Wildfires are also a risk in hot weather.
Most wildfires in the UK are caused by human activity. Every year, wildfires destroy large areas of countryside and wildlife habitats, causing long‑lasting damage to the environment. Wildfires can spread quickly and threaten homes and infrastructure, particularly during warm, dry weather.
- Do not light fires or barbecues in the countryside or other open spaces, including parks, moorland and wooded areas.
- Ensure smoking materials are fully stubbed out and disposed of carefully. Never throw cigarette ends from vehicles.
- Take all rubbish home with you, especially glass bottles, which can focus the sun’s rays and start a fire.
We're stepping up efforts to tackle potholes across the county with new treatments, techniques and equipment designed to improve the speed, quality and durability of repairs.
The move is part of our continued investment into Derbyshire’s roads as part of our £70 million Capital Programme, to continuously improve the way roads are maintained while offering longevity and value for money.
As part of this, we're exploring the use of a JCB Pothole Pro machine for the next three months.
This equipment can cut, crop and clean potholes in around eight minutes, helping crews carry out repairs more quickly. Its effectiveness will be assessed alongside existing methods to determine whether it offers a cost-effective and valuable addition to our pothole repair service.
These new efforts build on our rapid response service, with crews fixing around 2,000 potholes every week.

Are you a young person or do you have any young people in your family? We'd really like to encourage them to take part in our Your Council Your Voice survey to help shape the council's future direction.
It's important to get the views of everyone in Derbyshire, including the upcoming generation, as we plan services and budgets for the future.
We’d particularly like to hear from 16-35-year-olds to find out what you think about the services we run, your thoughts about where you live and whether you’d like to see changes or improvements – and, if so, in what way.
The survey is made up of 30 main questions and all answers will be closely analysed and used to feed into shaping the next Council Plan and ensuring budgets are targeted where they are most needed.
You can take part in the survey online. Paper copies are also available at libraries. It closes on Sunday 19 July.

If you're a parent or a carer, we’re interested in hearing from you to help shape the future of support for children, young people and families across Derbyshire.
You're invited to take part in a series of sessions intended to host a positive and honest conversation about what support for families looks like now and how it could be even better in the future.
We had a great response to the first session held earlier this month with more taking place throughout July.
These friendly, informal sessions are an opportunity to share your views, experiences and ideas about what support for families looks like today and how it could be improved. Whether your experiences have been positive or challenging, your voice matters.
The sessions are open to parents, carers and anyone with lived experience of family support services. Feedback shared will help shape how services for children, young people and families are delivered across Derbyshire.

Do you know or care for someone living with dementia?
Derbyshire Dementia Information and Advice Service is here to help.
Delivered by the Alzheimer’s Society, the service provides free support, information and advice for people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers across Derbyshire.
Whether you're concerned about memory loss, have recently received a diagnosis, are supporting a loved one, or simply want to learn more about living well with dementia, support is available at every stage of the journey.
The service can help with a wide range of topics, including:
- understanding dementia and its impact
- maintaining independence and wellbeing
- accessing local services and community support
- financial and legal matters
- planning for future care and support
- practical advice for everyday life.

Do you know a young person aged 16 to 24 who needs support planning their next steps into learning, training or work?
We're holding a series of Youth Employment Support (YES) events during July and August 2026 where experts will be on hand to provide information, advice and guidance.
The ‘Move on’ events kick-off with three careers fairs in July, featuring local opportunities, being held on:
- Monday 27 July 2026 at Swadlincote Adult Education Centre from 1pm to 4pm
- Tuesday 28 July 2026 at The Quad, Chesterfield from 1pm to 4pm
- Wednesday 29 July 2026 at Cotmanhay and Ilkeston Adult Education Centre from 1pm to 4pm.
Further sessions will take place in August with the YES team for support following exam results or for next steps planning. These sessions will be held on:
- Monday 24 August 2026 at Swadlincote Adult Education Centre from 11am to 4pm
- Tuesday 25 August 2026 at The Quad, Chesterfield from 11am to 4pm
- Thursday 27 August 2026 at Ilkeston Library from 11am to 4pm.
There's no need to book in advance, young people can drop in to any of the sessions on the day.

Do you use our household waste recycling centre at Glossop?
We're reminding residents who use the service to make sure they are registered to do so. This is to:
- help prevent them being used by people living outside the county
- help ensure we only pay for waste and recycling for Derbyshire residents.
Glossop will be the first of our sites to enforce the new system. From Monday 6 July 2026, vehicles that are not registered will be refused access to the site.
Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support Service is a freephone service available to everyone living in Derbyshire – open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
From 1 July 2026 the only way to contact the helpline will be by calling NHS 111 and then selecting the ‘mental health’ option (option 2).
Since April 2024, the 24/7 Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support Service offered local people two ways to call the team: via an 0800 number and via NHS 111. The 0800 number – 0800 028 0077 – will be switched off on 1 July.
When people dial 111 and select ‘mental health’, they are put through to their local helpline team who can tell them about local support services. Having one number simplifies the call handling process for the helpline team, meaning the team can respond to calls more effectively.
The line serving the Deaf community will continue to operate as usual. First, call 111 using the SignVideo app or SignVideo website. This will connect the user via video link to a BSL interpreter.

Preparations are about to get underway to move one of our libraries to its new home.
Staveley Library on Hall Lane will close to its last visitors in its current home at 12.30pm on Saturday 4 July 2026 so that work can begin on packing away all the books, computers and other materials and equipment ahead of its move to the new landmark Pavilion building in the town’s Market Place.
Borrowed items will automatically be renewed until the new library opens.
The new library will open to the public on Monday 20 July 2026, with an official opening ceremony taking place on the morning of Thursday 23 July 2026.
If you visit Shipley Country Park near Heanor, you'll be interested to hear that essential safety work will start next week to improve the stability of the dam at Osborne’s Pond.
The water level in Osborne’s Pond will be temporarily lowered and from Monday 6 July Shipley Lane bridleway will be closed at the point it crosses the dam, close to the entrance from Roper Avenue, to allow the work to take place.
The closure will be in place for a distance of around 250 metres and will be closed to all users including walkers, cyclists, horse-riding and all other traffic.
