The first step towards a long-term solution for the Doctor’s Gate landslip on the Snake Pass will be made this summer when the road is closed for three weeks for investigations to take place.
 From Monday June 15 to Friday July 3, the A57 will be closed between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir and we’d like to apologise to drivers for the inconvenience while these important works are carried out.
Two drilling rigs needed to identify the scope and causes of ground movement at the site will completely block the road meaning it will be closed to all motorised traffic.
During the closure we will also carry out the first phase of a major programme of road safety improvements funded by the Government.
This includes:
- repairs to potholes
- improvements to drainage
- installation of new safety barriers to protect motorcyclists.

Are you a driver aged 50 or over? We're offering our popular 'driving safer for longer' information sessions to Derbyshire residents.
The sessions offer you a chance to update your driving knowledge and aim to support you to continue driving for as long as you choose, exploring potential difficulties which may affect driving ability along with possible solutions.
The next session is on Saturday 27 June from 10am to 11.30am at our headquarters at County Hall in Matlock and costs £8.50.

Top-class Derbyshire businesses that support the county’s tourism industry have scooped several major awards in a prestigious competition that highlights the best of England.
A small Derbyshire hotel, gastro pub and a company that has accessible self-catering accommodation flew the flag – and triumphed – in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2026 which recognise exceptional quality, innovation and dedication.
A fourth award – for an unsung hero – went to Viv Smith of the National Stone Centre near Wirksworth.
The award winners are:
- Hoe Grange Holidays, Brassington – Gold, Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Award
- The Tickled Trout, Barlow – Silver, Pub of the Year
- Peak Edge Hotel, Chesterfield – Silver, Small Hotel of the Year
- Viv Smith, National Stone Centre – Silver, Unsung Hero Award.

Viv runs tours (free for children with adults paying a small fee) showing visitors how to spot fossils in the limestone – evidence of when the area was covered by sea hundreds of millions of years ago. Since she started her tours in 2023 she's raised more than £3,000 for charity through the National Stone Centre, used to educate children on visits and school trips.

Businesses across Derbyshire using steel in their operations are being urged to prepare for new import measures.
We're backing organisations including the British Chambers of Commerce and Make UK as they lobby the government over concerns about new measures to reduce duty-free import volumes of steel and impose tariffs on imports above the quota.
The measures, which come into force on 1 July 2026, are set to reduce duty-free import volumes by approximately 60% and subject imports above the new quota limits to a 50% tariff.
