With the warm weather expected to stay with us into the weekend, our partners at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service have some advice if you’re thinking of heading to the coast or visiting rivers and reservoirs closer to home.
 Open water may look inviting but please consider the dangers and do not be tempted to cool off in lakes, reservoirs, rivers or quarries.
If you get into trouble in the water, remember the RNLI’s advice to "Float to Live":
- Lean back
- Spread your arms and legs
- Stay calm and float to regain control
- Can’t swim? Float and shout for help.
- See someone struggling? Don’t go in – call 999 immediately.
Their advice follows the tragic events of recent days in which a number of people have drowned, particularly young people, trying to cool off during the heatwave.
Derbyshire foster carers, young people, professionals and senior councillors enjoyed a fun day to celebrate the success of a partnership which aims to find local homes for local children.
The event marked the continued growth of Foster for East Midlands Councils – a regional fostering recruitment hub established by us, Derby City Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
It brought together fostering communities from all the councils to celebrate the achievements and future ambitions of the partnership for a day of special activities at the Post Mill Centre in South Normanton.
It also highlighted the importance of play, fun and mutual support between fostering families, while recognising and celebrating the vital work foster carers do every day.

Located in Ambergate, the lab is one of only 10 council-run facilities in England and provides independent testing and verification of materials to help us deliver top quality highway repairs and schemes across Derbyshire.

We're asking you to beware of a scam email currently circulating.
Our trading standards officers are warning that the scam email claims households may receive a visit to check their smoke alarms and that those without a working alarm will be charged £500.
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service does not charge for home fire safety visits (Safe and Well visits) or any of the equipment fitted as part of these visits, including smoke alarms.
Avoid engaging with suspicious emails and report any concerns to Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133. Please also share the warning with friends, family and neighbours.

Are you involved with a local voluntary organisation in Derbyshire?
We're launching a new grant scheme for voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise organisations to apply for up to £1,000 to help create and promote smokefree spaces.
If successful, the grant could help:
- Create outdoor smokefree spaces
- Recruit 'champions' that signpost individuals to support to help them quit smoking
- Share information about the free stop smoking support offered by Live Life Better Derbyshire
- Promote making their site smokefree.
People are three times more likely to quit when they receive support than those that try on their own and Derbyshire’s Stop Smoking service, provided by Live Life Better Derbyshire, will work alongside grant recipients to ensure people who want to quit, can access the free support available.
The scheme has been created using £90,000 of government stop smoking funding and is open for applications until Friday 26 June 2026.

A behaviour psychologist with a long-standing career in education has been appointed to the role of Council Chairman for the year ahead.
Councillor Jodie Brown, who represents the Long Eaton South Division, was appointed to the role at our AGM and Full Council meeting on Wednesday 27 May.
Councillor Rob Reaney will support her as the newly appointed Vice Chairman.
Councillor Brown has nominated the charity STAND TO, which supports veterans and serving personnel across Derbyshire, as her chosen charity for the year ahead.
