Dinner lady celebrates 50 years

One of our longest serving catering assistants is celebrating 50 years in the job.

Dilys Brunt

Dilys, who joined the county council on 20 May 1976 aged 27, has worked her entire career at Fairfield Infant and Nursery School in Buxton.

Over five decades, Dilys has witnessed huge changes in preparing school meals – from the equipment she uses to changing menus and nutritional expectations.

But at the heart of it all is her love for looking after the children and ensuring they are well fed.

To honour her dedicated service, the school threw a party in her honour.

Dilys, a mum and grandmother, has also been nominated for a lifetime achievement from the Jamie Oliver School Meals Awards.

Having served multiple generations, including her own children and grandchildren. Dilys is truly the 'grandmother of the community', cherished, trusted and recognised by all.

Changes to home to school travel

home to school transport

Our Cabinet has agreed to change our home to school transport policies in line with national guidance for eligible school children aged five to 16, Post 16 learners and students with special educational needs and disabilities.

It follows a public consultation where 450 people gave their views on proposals to make them clearer, fairer and sustainable in the face of rising demand and increasing operational costs.

New equipment funding sets school up

We’re providing £525,000 of funding towards the cost of new equipment at a brand new primary school in South Derbyshire.

The state-of-the-art school will be run on behalf of the county council by the Flying High Partnership.

The money will be used to equip it with everything needed to support children’s education when the school opens – including desks, chairs and sports equipment, classroom resources, devices and interactive teaching boards.

The new school – which will be called the Drakelow Park Flying High Academy – is due to open in September 2026 and has been built for the council by the housing developers on Dracan Village.
