Cash boost for libraries

Alfreton, Ilkeston and Long Eaton libraries are set to benefit from a £440,000 funding boost.

We successfully bid for the money from Arts Council England’s Libraries Improvement Fund, which comes under the Government’s Arts Everywhere Fund.

The money will be used to make the three libraries more engaging for children and families, creating spaces for communities to use the libraries in more flexible and adaptable ways, and generating increased income to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service.

Children's homes praised

Children in Derbyshire care homes feel valued and listened to – according to Ofsted.

The independent body, which inspects and regulates education and care services for children, found that Derbyshire’s children’s homes provide safety and stability for young people.

Ofsted visited 11 of our 12 homes that were due for inspection last year. Nine of the residential homes visited have been judged to be good or better in the support they provide and the children generally receive either good or outstanding care.

Although two further homes have been judged as requiring improvement, the inspectors are assured that staff are making the progress required to improve.

Primary school places

If your child is due to start school in September the wait to find out if they got their place is over.

primary school story

We’ve offered places to more than 10,000 children who are due to start at primary or move up to junior school.

Of those parents who applied for a reception place by the closing date, 93.57% were offered their first preference school. Overall, of those who applied by the closing date, 98.23% were offered a place at one of their three preferred schools.

And of those who applied for a junior place by the deadline, 97.48% were offered a place at their first-preference school and 98.05% were offered a place at one of their three preferred schools.

If you applied online, you should already have a confirmation email. If you applied by telephone or completed a paper application a letter is on the way to you.

Loan shark awareness sessions

When people are in desperate need of some quick cash, loan sharks may seem like the answer – but they're not. If you work in the community you can find out how to help steer people away from these criminals.

FREE online training on loan shark awareness is available for anyone who may encounter people at risk of being manipulated by a loan shark.

The Illegal Money Lending Team (also known as Stop Loan Sharks) is a national organisation that investigates and prosecutes illegal money lenders and provides specialist support for people affected by this crime.

They are running free awareness sessions to help people understand the world of illegal money lending. The training includes how to identify victims and signpost them to specialist support.

Belper care home update

Negotiations are under way with an established care provider to take over the running of Ada Belfield care home as part of our transformation programme to reshape our in-house care services.

Ada Belfield Care Centre

Only providers registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and with experience and expertise in the running of registered residential care or nursing homes to a good or outstanding standard, were considered.

We offered a commercial lease for the whole site, including the care home and library. The library will be unaffected by any new leasing arrangements and we will continue to operate it.

We're working through the details with the company and, as the home is due to be transferred as a going concern, there aren't expected to be any changes to the day-to-day care for residents.
