Schools in Derby and Derbyshire have dramatically improved the way they support neurodiverse children thanks to a project we’re part of to improve inclusion.
We help to provide specialist training as part of the Partnership for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) project to support teachers and school staff, working together with parents and carers.
Relatively small and inexpensive changes have helped to transform learning and opportunities for neurodiverse children – supporting them to thrive and achieve their potential.
The project ran in 38 primary schools during the academic year 2024/25 and a further 25 were supported in 2025/26.
It's an example of how services for children who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are starting to improve in Derbyshire, following a joint Ofsted and Care Quality Commission inspection in 2024.

A new Derbyshire-wide campaign is launching to help parents‑to‑be access clear, trusted and up‑to‑date information about having a healthy pregnancy.
Healthy Beginnings brings together practical guidance, expert advice and local services for anyone planning a family or already expecting.
The campaign – created by us in partnership with Derby City Council, Joined Up Care Derbyshire and local health organisations – highlights how small steps before and during pregnancy can make a big difference to a baby’s long‑term health.
This includes support on maintaining a healthy weight, taking folic acid, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, and managing long‑term conditions.
It also shares tips on nutrition, exercise and emotional wellbeing.

We've launched a new 'focused, pragmatic and no-nonsense' Council Plan which will set our direction up to 2029.
The plan, which sets out a clear change in direction, was approved earlier this year and has now been launched.
The simpler, easy-to-understand plan outlines our vision and the outcomes we seek to achieve, with a focus on prioritising core statutory services, cutting bureaucracy and maximising efficiency.
Cabinet Members will be asked to approve plans to hold a public consultation about the future of Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre.
A public consultation would give local people the opportunity to have their say about proposals to close the recycling centre as part of measures to help us ensure we can set a balanced budget.
Closing the centre on Melandra Road would save £360,000 a year in running costs.
Glossop collects the lowest volume of waste and recyclables, receives the fewest visits, needs substantial investment and just 13% of visitors are registered to use the site, suggesting a large proportion of users are from outside the county.
If the public consultation gets the go-ahead from our Cabinet at a meeting on Thursday 9 April 2026, it's anticipated a 12-week consultation would be launched next month.

A letter from Ofsted, looking at our work with children, has highlighted strong and effective leadership, partnership working and a clear focus on improving the life chances of children across Derbyshire.
We were asked to review the impact of our work on children, young people, their families and wider communities during a yearly check-in with the independent regulator.
Senior leaders from children’s services met with inspectors for a ‘positive’ engagement meeting which focused on family help and children’s social care.
Following the meeting, the inspectors said that Derbyshire continues to demonstrate strong and effective leadership, with a clear focus on improving the experiences of children, young people, their families and wider communities.
All households in Derbyshire are to receive free weekly food collections as part of reforms set out by central government. But do you know what you can and can’t put in your food recycling caddy?
You can find information about the new collections on our website or from your local district or borough council which will operate the service every week.
Derbyshire Dales residents already have food waste collected separately each week so collections there will remain the same.
All residents receiving a new collection service will get a new outdoor caddy for their food waste. The caddies are lockable so they don’t attract wildlife.
We're urging you to start separating food waste into your new outdoor caddy as soon as collections in your area begin. Details of when collections will start are being delivered to households along with their caddy and are also available by contacting your local district or borough council.
