£70m investment in our roads

Cllr Charlotte Hill

Our cabinet members are to be asked to agree a major programme of work to improve the county’s roads at a meeting this week.

The cabinet meeting on Thursday 13 November will consider a report which sets out a multi-million package, likely to be around £70m, to improve roads, pavements, traffic signals, landslips, and much more.

One new initiative is the introduction of ‘fence to fence’ working on the larger projects we carry out. This means that when a road is closed for resurfacing other teams take the opportunity to carry out drainage or safety work, making the most of the closure and reducing inconvenience for local residents.

Local councillors are also to be given a say in which residential streets are resurfaced. All councillors have been asked to suggest two streets most in need of attention from their area. A £3m pot will pay for those most in need.

Busy month for trading standards

October was another busy month for our trading standards team who continue to fight the battle to rid streets, markets and shops of unsafe, fake and illegal goods.

Two nights at the Charter Fair in Ilkeston resulted in just over 200 soft toys being seized by trading standards officers patrolling the fair checking on goods and toys on offer, though most of the items on sale met correct safety standards.

Visits to other outdoor events will continue across the county in a bid to rid Derbyshire of rogue traders and keep residents safe.

The work at the Charter Fair came in the same week as trading standards officers, working with Derbyshire police, seized more than 1,000 counterfeit items and some potentially unsafe cosmetics from premises in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, including designer clothing, footwear, handbags, accessories and tobacco.

Members of the public are urged to report any suspected counterfeit or unsafe products to Citizens Advice Consumer Service telephone: 0808 223 1133 to help keep communities safe.

Uniting Derbyshire

Did you know the government is planning to simplify how councils operate in Derby and Derbyshire – a process known as local government reorganisation.

LGR local government reorganisation

You may have filled in our survey over the summer to give us your views on options for replacing the existing 10 councils in Derby and Derbyshire with two unitary councils which deliver all of the councils’ services in their area, with one for the north and one for the south and the city.

More of you were opposed to the options for two new councils than were in favour – and there was significant concern about splitting the county into more than one authority.

Now detailed and independent expert analysis comparing options for two councils against an option for one council for the whole area suggests creating one council is in the best interests of residents and businesses because:

  • it unites Derbyshire and retains the area's strong spirit and identity
  • it saves the most money compared to options we assessed for splitting Derby and Derbyshire into two unitary councils and has less set-up costs
  • it would be less disruptive as the largest proportion of council services in the area are already run on a countywide basis including essential services such as adult social care, children's social care, highways and transport, public health, and waste disposal

South Normanton Nursery School Modeshift STARS

For the second year in a row the nursery, in Hamlet Lane, has been named a best-practice model for encouraging walking, scooting and cycling as part of daily routines. These efforts support the children’s safety, health and long-term travel habits while reducing reliance on cars.

As a result of its continued success, South Normanton Nursery School will represent Derbyshire at the National STARS School Travel Awards Celebration on Wednesday 18 March 2026 at The Royal Society in London. The nursery is in the running for the Modeshift STARS National Early Years Establishment of the Year 2025 to 2026.
