Students with special educational needs and disabilities have officially started learning at a new site in Long Eaton as part of our £5million investment.
An extra 70 school places have been created at Brackenfield SEND School in a refurbished building called The Orchard, which houses new teaching facilities for young people starting their secondary education.
The former county building, just 300 yards from the existing school, has been renovated to support young people with SEND using £320,000 funding we provided.
This is the first of six school developments to be completed using the £5m funding, part of an overall investment of £11million, to create 300 additional places at 10 special schools across the county.
📸Pictured at the opening of The Orchard is Cabinet Member for Children and Family Help Councillor Sam Redfern, with Executive Headteacher Trish Turner and pupils Ashton, Meyra and Szymon.
A huge thank you to the Derbyshire residents who have now registered nearly 134,000 vehicles so they can continue to use our household waste recycling centres. And if you haven’t yet signed up, there’s still time.
You can register online but we know that’s not possible for everyone so we also offer registration by phone. Contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190 to speak to someone who can help.
The registration scheme is being introduced to make sure the sites are not used by people who live outside Derbyshire. It follows a 32% increase in the amount of waste collected at the sites since 2017/18 which has risen to 85,000 tonnes a year, costing an extra £700,000 - £800,000 in annual recycling and disposal costs.
Entry to the recycling sites is monitored using automatic number plate recognition technology (ANPR). Each Derbyshire resident over the age of 17 can register up to two vehicles. Registration is free of charge. It gives access to all Derbyshire recycling centres (excluding Raynesway, which belongs to Derby City Council).
Residents wanting to use a van (except camper vans) will need to register for each visit and access will last 24 hours.
Traders can pay to dispose of trade waste at our Ashbourne and Stonegravels (Chesterfield) sites between 8.30-9.30am and 5-6pm and can make an unlimited number of visits.

Is your child due to start secondary school next year? If the answer is yes, it's time to apply for their place.
Parents of Year Six pupils living in Derbyshire can now apply for their child’s secondary school place for September 2026.
Around 8,500 Year Six primary school children – who were born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015 – have been sent information about the application process.
Applications opened this week and the deadline to submit applications to us is midnight on Thursday 31 October 2025. Applying online is the most efficient method and also allows our school admissions team to most effectively receive and gather the information it requires to allocate places.
Any parents who are a refused a place for their child have a right of appeal to an independent panel. Parents who do not have access to the internet can contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190.

Across the East Midlands, too many children in care are placed away from familiar schools, friends and communities due to a shortage of local foster carers.
|
If you’d like to become part of a dedicated network working to keep children rooted in their communities, why not consider fostering for us?
You don’t need any qualifications - just time, space and a big heart. Be the reason a child feels safe, valued, and hopeful.
Foster for East Midlands is a partnership between Derby City, Derbyshire, Nottingham City, and Nottinghamshire councils, which supports recruitment of foster carers offering guidance and support with the process and training.
