Calling all parents and carers. Do you have a child starting school this year? Remember to get their eyes tested before they start.
All children can get free NHS eye tests at their local opticians up to the age of 16, or if they are aged 16, 17 or 18 and still in full-time education.
A child does not have to be able to read for their vision to be checked.
It's important to remember that not all children will show signs of having a vision problem. However, there are some signs that could indicate that they do.
They include:
- Headaches or eyestrain
- Complaining of blurred vision
- Falling behind with their schoolwork / studies
- Attention / concentration issues
- Issues with hand eye coordination
- Unusually clumsy
- Having siblings or family members who wear glasses or have eye problems
- Appearing upset or angry at a particular task, pushing it away.

Are you a working parent or carer of a pre-school child? You could be eligible for up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week until they start school.
Eligible working families can now apply for 30 hours of childcare - up from the existing 15 hours - from the term after their baby turns nine months old until they reach school age.
The Government has expanded its funding scheme to increase the number of families eligible and help them better balance work and home life - and estimates it could save some households up to £7,500 a year.
If you think you may qualify, check your eligibility and apply for a childcare code by Sunday 31 August here Free Childcare for Working Parents: Apply for free childcare - GOV.UK
We're asking families to have their say about childcare to help us plan better support services.
We’re carrying out a survey with parents and carers of children aged up to 14 – or up to 18 with additional needs.
The survey will assess the current childcare market in Derbyshire and to do that we need to hear about families’ current and future childcare needs to help us plan better support and improve how services and information are provided.
From this September, eligible families will be able to access up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week from the term after their baby turns nine months old until they reach school age.
This national funding scheme has changed the childcare market in Derbyshire and we want to find out how it’s affected local families and how we can help.
Please complete our survey before the Sunday 31 August deadline to help us provide the support and services families need.

Do you keep birds, either commercially or just a few in your back garden? If you do, make sure you know all about avian influenza.
Bird flu cases are on the up in England. And while none have yet been reported in Derbyshire, it’s important for all bird keepers in the county to be vigilant and remind themselves of the rules around registration, hygiene and biosecurity to protect their flocks.
If you suspect bird flu in poultry or other captive birds, you must report it to APHA, the Government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency, by calling 03000 200 301.
