One of our longest serving school crossing patrols Denise Elliott has celebrated 40 years of keeping children safe on the roads.
To mark the milestone the mum-of-two, from Matlock, was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a letter of congratulations for her outstanding dedication to the role.
Denise is a familiar face to residents and road users as she controls traffic on Smedley Street to help pupils get to All Saints CE Infants, Castle View Primary, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and Highfields School.
We’re always on the look out for friendly people to become 'lollipop' men and women across the county, so if you think that you – or someone you know – fits the bill, find out how to join the team.
We’ve launched a questionnaire to find out what you think of our proposals to reduce the number of councils in Derby and Derbyshire from 10 to two.
The Government has asked councils in areas like Derbyshire where there are two layers of councils, known as ‘tiers’, to come up with proposals for moving to a single tier known as unitary councils.
Derbyshire currently has a county council which looks after one set of services – including education, adults and children’s social care, waste disposal and road safety and maintenance – and district and borough councils which provide different services including social housing, homelessness, leisure and waste collections in smaller areas.
Derby is single tier – one ‘unitary’ council providing all of these services in the city.
We’re proposing to replace the existing councils with two unitary councils – one for the north of the county and one for the south, including Derby.
We’ve put together three options for how this could work:
Option A – The boundary for each council would follow existing district boundaries with Amber Valley in the northern council area along with High Peak, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover and Chesterfield.
Option B – The boundary for each council would follow existing district boundaries with Amber Valley in the southern council area along with Erewash, South Derbyshire and Derby city.
Option C – A new boundary would be created with parts of Amber Valley and Derbyshire Dales in the northern council area along with High Peak, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover and Chesterfield. Other parts of Amber Valley and Derbyshire Dales would be included in the southern council area along with Erewash, South Derbyshire and Derby city.
The options we're proposing aim to simplify the system, provide better value for council tax-payers and create stronger communities.

Road maintenance is the top priority for a £41 million investment programme in the county’s roads and transport.
Major new maintenance and transport schemes worth up to £41 million to repair the county’s roads, tackle surface water flooding, improve pavements and reduce traffic congestion have been approved at a meeting of our Cabinet yesterday, Thursday 24 July.
The 2025/26 budget for the county’s road maintenance programme, funded by the Department for Transport, totals £37 million – £13.8 million more than we expected.
Almost two-thirds of the maintenance funding – £24 million – has been earmarked for road repair schemes.
The money will be targeted at key ‘A’, ‘B’ and residential roads across the county to fix potholes and to repair and resurface roads.

If you live in or visit Castleton, you might be interested in having your say on proposals for new parking restrictions for the village.
Castleton, in the heart of the Peak District National Park, has been attracting higher levels of visitors all year round over the past few years.
Increased visitor numbers bring a welcome boost to the local economy, but for some local residents, inconsiderate parking has become an increasing concern.
In response to these issues, we've been working with Castleton Parish Council on a range of new restrictions for the village.
The proposals include new ‘red routes’ which prohibit parking at any time on several roads, new limited waiting bays and new pay and display parking bays. The red routes will be a first for Derbyshire, but are used extensively in other parts of the country.
If residents want to request a copy of the Traffic Regulation Orders, or have their say on the proposals, they should email place.permanenttro@derbyshire.gov.uk for further details.
Feedback about the proposals will close on Friday 8 August 2025.
