Hot weather is something many of us look forward to but it can pose a health risk to some people. With high temperatures predicted to continue, there’s lots you can do to help keep yourself and your loved ones cool.
Top tips to beat the heat:
- keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
- if you're going to exercise or walk the dog, do these when it's cooler, such as in the morning or evening
- keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains
- if you do go outside, cover up, wear a hat and sunglasses, seek shade and use sunscreen
- drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
- check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell
- know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
- carry water when you're out and about.
We're also urging you to stay safe around open water. It's tempting to go for a dip to cool off in hot weather but it can be a risky thing to do. Look at the Water Safety Code from the Royal Life Saving Society. It will equip you and your family with vital lifesaving knowledge to keep you safe, in, on and around water:
Our trading standards team is warning residents to be on their guard against rogue roofers after nearly half of the doorstep crime incidents reported to them last year involved roofing work.
Over the past two years there has been a sharp rise in the number of reports, with people claiming they have been ripped off by traders on their doorstep offering to carry out work that was not necessarily needed.
Reports have included rogue roofers using high-pressure sales tactics and claiming that urgent repairs are needed, and exploiting homeowners, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
Low prices for jobs are offered at first, with costs then rising, along with demands for upfront payments.
Our trading standards team has issued some top tips on avoiding rogue roofers and are urging residents to check out our Trusted Trader scheme if they need work carrying out.

Would you like to create new woodland on your land or in your community?
Why not join our FREE online event and find out more on Tuesday 22 July from 6-7pm.
Grants are now available for landowners, farmers and communities in eastern and southern Derbyshire to plant trees and hedgerows, boost biodiversity and tackle climate change.
Trees can enhance wildlife, mitigate flood risks and absorb noise along with many other benefits and our Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest team is here to support you with 100% funding for all the costs of woodland creation, including:
- tree planting
- hedgerows
- fencing and gate installation
- advice and support
- ongoing maintenance to ensure the new woodland thrives.
The project, funded by England’s Community Forests supported by Defra, aims to provide more green space to Derbyshire residents, particularly in areas with less woodland, supporting our ambition to plant a million trees by 2030.
Watch our short films about new woodland planted at Denby and Tibshelf and hear from those involved.

We always advise residents who need a loan to think carefully about where they borrow money from, as some forms of credit can prove very expensive. That's why we promote local community banks, which are not-for-profit financial co-operatives.
We’re also running a FREE loan shark awareness event on Wednesday 16 July from 1.30pm - 4.30pm at Loundsley Green Community Centre, Chesterfield. S40 4QU
Pop along to find out about the work we’re doing to prevent illegal money lending and to keep you, and your finances, safe.
You’ll hear from a range of local and national debt and financial support organisations and there'll be advice and support on hand from local organisations giving advice on affordable credit, income maximisation, free school meals, debt management and more.
If you have pets you'll want to protect them from fake medicines and treatments.
Our trading standards team says counterfeit flea and worming treatments are being sold online – and they could make your pet seriously ill.
🛒 Only buy flea and worming treatments from trusted sources.
🔍 Check for spelling mistakes, odd smells, and poor packaging.
📢 Report suspicious products to Trading Standards or Crimestoppers.

We're celebrating the collective voices of older people in Derbyshire.
It’s been 20 years since the first Derbyshire 50+ forums were set up and they’ve grown a lot since then.
50+ Forums are about creating a powerful voice for people aged 50 and over in Derbyshire. There are now forums to be found across Derbyshire with over 3,000 members between them.
By working together as a collective voice, the forums work to bring about real change to the lives of their communities.
Each local forum is independently run by local people for local people. They meet regularly to discuss important issues, work with organisations to make improvements to services and facilities and find time to have fun too.
If you'd like to get involved find out more about 50+ Forums, email fiftyplusforums@derbyshire.gov.uk or phone 01629 539623 and leave a message.
