Summer Reading Challenge

Do you have primary-aged children in your family? Why not get them involved in the Summer Reading Challenge and help to keep their reading skills up over the long school holiday?

summer reading challenge 2025 story garden

Sign up at your local library any time throughout the summer. This year’s theme is Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors.

The challenge is to read six or more library books. Youngsters will collect up to six stickers and, once they've collected them all, they'll have completed the challenge and will be awarded a medal and certificate.

Derbyshire libraries will be hosting a variety of events and activities to entertain children, with many linked to the reading challenge. Check out what's happening at yours.

Local government reorganisation

Proposals for the future of Derbyshire are due to be discussed by our councillors at next week’s meeting of the full council.

Central government announced a major reorganisation of local councils across the country to simplify the system and make it more efficient.

In the meeting, on Wednesday 9 July, our councillors will be asked to consider whether to move forward to explore a new ‘preferred option’ for reorganising councils in Derbyshire.

The new option is being considered following feedback from Government that the council’s proposal must include a clear single option and geography for the whole of the area (Derby city and Derbyshire), not partial coverage.

It would still mean reducing the number of councils in Derby and Derbyshire from 10 to two, but with one covering the northern half of the county and a separate council covering Derby and the south.

Helping residents feel safe

Have you heard about our keep safe cards? Residents can use them to get help at one of our Safe Places.

keep safe safe places

A Safe Place is somewhere you can go if you need help, are lost or feel scared when out and about.

They include libraries, shops, restaurants, pharmacies, visitor attractions, GP surgeries and more. Each venue has a sticker in their window so you can see that they are part of the scheme and know you can go in and ask for help if you need to.

Keep safe cards are available for Derbyshire residents over the age of 11. It has space for the person’s name, the name and phone number of a family member or carer and anything else a Safe Place might need to know.

Do you fancy joining them? Did you know we've got a FREE Lower My Drinking app to help you reduce the amount of alcohol you drink?

It's is a great tool to have in your back pocket if you would like to cut down a little.

There's also lots of support available in Derbyshire if you have concerns about the amount that you, or someone you know, is drinking.

Hope Valley travel survey

Hope Valley summer dawn

Do you live in or visit Hope Valley?

We've launched a public consultation to get your views about active travel, which includes walking, cycling or ‘wheeling’ – using a scooter, mobility scooter or wheelchair.

Fill in our Active Travel Masterplan survey and, if you like, comment on a draft Active Travel Masterplan for the area.

The draft masterplan suggests a range of measures which would make active travel safer, more convenient and more appealing to a wider range of people.

In addition to the online survey there are two drop-in sessions:

  • Hathersage Memorial Hall – Thursday 17 July 2025, 1-7pm.
  • Bradwell War Memorial Hall – Tuesday 12 August 2025 1-7pm.

We've already carried out similar consultations in Belper, Glossop and Ilkeston last year.

The views gathered in the surveys are used when we make bids to the Government for funding to carry out active travel improvements in the future.
