Surface dressing plans

Our annual surface dressing programme is set to start on 25 June. The programme is part of wider work to repair and improve the county’s roads.

Almost 60 roads are to be surface dressed, which will extend their life. There will be road signage in advance and you'll get a letter if it's going to closely affect you.

When we carry out surface dressing, we usually close the road for safety reasons and put a signed diversion in place.

We can't surface dress in some weather conditions, for example when it's damp, wet or cold, which could delay the works at the last minute.

Illicit vapes fine for Derbyshire business

seized vapes June 2025

Following an investigation by our trading standards team, a Derbyshire business has been fined more than £9,000 and ordered to pay nearly £2,500 costs after admitting possessing for supply vapes that did not comply with strict regulations.

Ladchumicanthan Shanmuganathan, 48, sole director of the company U&I UK Retail Ltd, appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Monday (9 June), where he pleaded guilty to 20 charges relating to the possession for supply of non-compliant vapes at Gamesley Convenience Store, 92 – 94 Glossop Road, Gamesley.

We're on track with support for children

Ofsted finds we have continued to build on our 'Good' support services for children and young people who are at risk of harm and in need of help

Inspectors visited us on 7 and 8 May 2025 to carry out a 'focused' visit of our arrangements specifically for children subject to a child-in-need or child protection plan.

The visit followed up on Ofsted’s full inspection of our services for children in care or at risk of harm, families who need social work support and young people leaving care in January 2024 which were graded as 'Good' across the board.

You can read Derbyshire County Council's Ofsted outcome letter and the inspection report in full.

Disability aid advice

Our trading standards team is backing a campaign by Citizens Advice to help people who need disability aids find trustworthy sellers and know their rights.

mobility scooter

Disability aids like mobility scooters, stairlifts and hearing aids provide independence for disabled people, giving them dignity and control over everyday activities.

But Citizens Advice has found that the disability aids market is failing consumers. In 2023, they received one complaint every hour about a disability aid purchase. This includes faulty goods, installation problems, misleading claims and high-pressure sales tactics.

We're advising people to research reputable firms, for example businesses that have signed up to Derbyshire Trusted Trader, or are recommended by established age or disability charities; know their consumer rights on returning faulty goods; and think about the best payment method to use.

Help at hand for carers

This year’s Carers Week may be over, but our support services are always available.

Carers Week logo

Derbyshire Carers Association provides lots of advice, information and support on our behalf for unpaid carers in Derbyshire, including:

  • An information and advice helpline.
  • Face-to-face, home visits and telephone support.
  • Carer’s assessments.

Many carers don’t see themselves as carers. They’re just doing what anyone would do to care for someone they love. But if you care for someone who couldn’t cope without your help, there’s a range of support to help you with your role.

Tourism awards

Do you run a tourist attraction, pub, restaurant, hotel, B&B, campsite or other visitor experience in Derbyshire?

Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby Tourism Awards

Applications for the 2026 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards have officially opened, providing tourism businesses with the unique opportunity to gain prestigious local and national recognition.

The awards celebrate excellence and outstanding achievement across the area’s £2.89 billion tourism sector and give visitor economy businesses the opportunity to share their success stories, generate valuable publicity and reach new customers.

Entrants must be based in Derbyshire, the city of Derby, or within the Peak District National Park boundary, and must be part of the visitor economy.
