Venues sought to display portraits

A project to celebrate local heroes in Derbyshire by immortalising them in art is looking for venues to display some of the portraits.

Melissa Speed We Are All Derbyshire libraries portrait project

Seven of our libraries hosted local portrait artist Melissa Speed throughout August last year, to gather nominations from residents about which local unsung heroes they thought deserved to have their portrait painted for the project, called We Are All Derbyshire.

Melissa, who appeared on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year in October 2023, is now in the portrait creation phase, with some portraits already complete and ready for framing.

The portraits will all be revealed at the opening of the collective exhibition on Friday 28 March at 7pm until 8.30pm at Glossop Labour Club in Chapel Street. They'll be on show there for a week and will then go on display individually or in small sets in places like cafes, some libraries, bars and community centres.

If you would like to exhibit a portrait, or several, at your venue, Melissa would love to hear from you. It could be for any length of time up until Saturday 21 June. Email melissa@weareallderbyshire.com

Respect our roadworkers

We’re asking people to respect our roadworkers after an incident where a driver ignored a road closure and knocked an employee over.

roadworker injured by dangerous driving

The driver, John Leonard Muckle, from Broom Avenue, Pilsley, Chesterfield, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and disqualified from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving at Derby Crown Court on 22 January.

On 13 May 2024, while roadworkers were fixing potholes on Locko Lane, Hardstoft, the court heard that Muckle drove past road closed signs and traffic management, and then weaved his way past several roadworkers and equipment.

After driving past traffic management staff, he tried to get past a council truck on one side of the lane, and couldn’t, so he reversed in an attempt to go round the other side of the truck and while doing so knocked one of the workers into the hedgerow. He did not stop and drove off. The roadworker involved was badly bruised.

Local government reorganisation

The Government has clarified our position in its plans to move to single-tier councils in England.

County Hall

Derbyshire won't be in the first wave of local counties picked to reorganise its two-tier structure, but we've been asked to make plans to move to a single tier further down the line.

We'll work with the other Derbyshire councils to submit interim plans in March, with a view to submitting a full proposal in November – subject to our Full Council approving the move next week.

This means that Derbyshire County Council elections will take place on Thursday 1 May as planned. The government’s announcement included a decision for the councils in the first tranche to postpone their elections.

Library of Things

library of things

Buxton Library of Things is celebrating its first birthday.

Nearly 200 people have already registered to use it since it launched on 30 January 2024.

The inventory of items that can be borrowed, for a maximum £5 per item, per week, includes a wide range of tools and domestic equipment that people probably only need occasionally.

We host the Library of Things at our Buxton Library in Kents Bank Road. It's run by Transition Buxton volunteers.

Using the Library of Things means fewer carbon emissions to manufacture and ship tools, it cuts electrical waste and helps towards our target of the county reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Browse the inventory online any time, join, reserve items, collect and return them, at Buxton Library on Monday evenings 5pm-7pm, or Saturday mornings 10am-midday.

Anybody with a question, donation, or who'd like to join the volunteer team can email library@transitionbuxton.co.uk

Free online tree event

Would you like to create new woodland on your land or in your community?

Heartwood forest

Why not join our FREE online event and find out more on Tuesday 25 February from 6-7pm..

Grants are now available for landowners, farmers and communities in eastern and southern Derbyshire to plant trees and hedgerows, boost biodiversity and tackle climate change.

Trees can enhance wildlife, mitigate flood risks, absorb noise and capture carbon, and our Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest team is here to support you with 100% funding for all the costs of woodland creation, including:

  • tree planting
  • hedgerows
  • fencing and gate installation
  • advice and support
  • ongoing maintenance for up to 15 years to ensure the new woodland thrives.

The project, funded by England’s Community Forests as part of Defra’s Nature for Climate programme, aims to provide more green space to Derbyshire residents, particularly in areas with less woodland, supporting our ambition to plant a million trees by 2030.
