This week 133 schools across the county have recived a free apple tree as part of our Million Trees project.
This project encourages the planting of at least a million trees in Derbyshire by 2030 to help tackle the effects of climate change.
All Derbyshire schools were invited to plant a tree in their grounds with the trees being funded by our cleaning and landscape maintenance contractor, Vertas Derbyshire Limited.
Once planted the trees will be added to the tree map and Million Trees totaliser which currently stands at 561,073.
If you've planted a tree anywhere in Derbyshire since June 2021 it can be counted towards the million trees target.
📷 Pictured are pupils from Lea Primary School at Lea, near Matlock, receiving their free tree, with, from left: Jean Thompson, Vertas; Karen Maycock, Headteacher; Councillor Carolyn Renwick, our Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment; and Martin Overton, Lead Operations Manager, Vertas.
If you keep birds, our trading standards officers advise that you must follow enhanced biosecurity measures.
The UK Chief Veterinary Officer ordered a new Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) to cover the whole of England from noon on Saturday 25 January, following the escalating number of cases of avian influenza around the country and continued heightened risk levels in wild birds.
There are currently no reported cases in Derbyshire.

An improvement plan for children and young people with special needs and disabilities has been published by a partnership of Derbyshire’s education, health and children’s services.
The Priority Impact Plan sets out actions the Derbyshire Local Area SEND Partnership – made up of children’s services, schools, health and the public and private sector – will take on areas highlighted for improvement in a report published by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission in November.
Public buildings in rural locations, such as libraries, schools and doctors’ surgeries are set to have faster, more reliable gigabit broadband.
We're supporting the D2N2 Gigahubs £1.2m project which is being led by Nottinghamshire County Council across the two counties.
Twenty-one sites have been identified across Derbyshire, plus one in Derby city and two in Nottinghamshire, with more eligible sites to be identified.
Eligibility for the improved service is based on the quality of the existing broadband, location and whether the public building is due to benefit from other planned commercial broadband upgrades.
Now telecommunications specialists Neos Networks has been appointed to deliver the scheme. Neos is partnering up with Openreach and Netomnia to help with the infrastructure build and we expect the full scheme will be live by Spring 2026.
It's funded thanks to an early investment as part of the East Midlands Combined County Authority devolution negotiations in 2023.

Our Civic Chairman, Councillor Tony Kemp, with Managing Director, Emma Alexander, lit a candle at County Hall, Matlock, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday 27 January.
We remembered all those murdered during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Visit www.hmd.org.uk to find out more.
We also lit up County Hall purple that evening as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust #LightTheDarkness campaign.

Do you own a business or are you involved with a community venue? We're urging you to sign up to a FREE scheme supporting breastfeeding families.
Breastfeeding has lots of positive impacts for the health of those who are breastfeeding and their babies. It's important to make sure that families feel comfortable to feed while out and about. This can help reduce feelings of loneliness, improve mental health and reduce stigma.
That’s why we run the Breastfeeding Welcome Here Award, a free accreditation scheme to show the registered venues that support families to breastfeed. And we’re proud to announce that County Hall in Matlock has signed up to the scheme too!
