Do you use the Via Gellia between Cromford and Newhaven? Many trees along the road are suffering from ash dieback and must be felled.
We’ll be closing the road (A5012) at various points the week beginning Monday 27 January 2025, so our contractors can carry out the work.
Clearing trees, from both land that we are responsible for and privately owned land, will continue until the end of February 2025. Throughout this time, a section of the road will be closed completely to traffic on weekdays between 8am and 4pm. Overnight one lane will be open with traffic lights in place.
Ash dieback causes decay under the bark, making trees brittle and more prone to falling over in high winds. As branches and stems die back there is a greater possibility of deadwood falling into the road and causing a safety risk. We're taking this action to remove that risk but it’s important that it’s done before the nesting season begins.
We’re grateful to the many landowners on the Via Gellia who have worked with us to help minimise disruption and costs for all involved.
No matter where you're travelling this year, you can rely on single bus journeys across Derbyshire being capped at just £3 throughout 2025.
The £3 cap gives you peace of mind with a price you can depend on. So, whether you’re off to the shops, to work, to see friends and family or for a weekend away, you’ll pay no more than £3 per journey.
Are you a library user? If you are, you need to know about our new library management system and how it will temporarily affect services.
The Library Management System (LMS) manages the account details and loan history of all library users as well as helping staff to manage the collection of books and other resources across our network of 43 county-run libraries.
The two community-managed libraries at Tideswell and Woodville will also move to the new system.
We're introducing the new LMS in February. It will modernise how our libraries work day-to-day and be more cost-effective and efficient.
Work starts on the implementation of the switchover on Thursday 6 February and all library users will be affected as they will be unable to access some of the services and resources they normally use for up to one week.

The county's carbon emissions are down but more challenges lie ahead.
There was good news in our recent report on implementing our Climate Change Strategy, as published in 2021. This included a target of the council reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2032, or sooner, and assisting the county as a whole to do so by 2050 in line with the UK Government’s national commitment.
The county council is on track to deliver the majority of the targets in the strategy within the timescales and our carbon emissions have reduced by 73% since 2009. This is welcome but the reduction in emissions by the council is slowing down and there are still challenges to be faced as we work towards our target of the council reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2032, or sooner, and assisting the county as a whole to do so by 2050 in line with the UK Government’s national commitment.
A new Climate Change Strategy for Derbyshire County Council for 2026 onwards is now being drawn up.

Would you like to create new woodland on your land or in your community?
Why not join our FREE online event and find out more on Tuesday 25 February from 6-7pm..
Grants are now available for landowners, farmers and communities in eastern and southern Derbyshire to plant trees and hedgerows, boost biodiversity and tackle climate change.
Trees can enhance wildlife, mitigate flood risks, absorb noise and capture carbon, and our Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest team is here to support you with 100% funding for all the costs of woodland creation, including:
- tree planting
- hedgerows
- fencing and gate installation
- advice and support
- ongoing maintenance for up to 15 years to ensure the new woodland thrives.
The project, funded by England’s Community Forests as part of Defra’s Nature for Climate programme, aims to provide more green space to Derbyshire residents, particularly in areas with less woodland, supporting our ambition to plant a million trees by 2030.

Have you registered to use our household waste recycling centres yet?
More than 47,000 Derbyshire residents have now successfully done so and can continue to use all nine of our household waste recycling centres. There’s still time to register and we’re urging you to sign-up as soon as possible.
The registration scheme is making things fairer and more cost-effective for Derbyshire residents by helping to reduce the amount of waste that is being brought to Derbyshire recycling centres from outside of the county.
There’s a load of helpful information on our website to explain and help with the registration process.
If you're unable to register online you can call into your nearest Derbyshire library where a librarian can help you to register. Or you can phone Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190 to speak to someone who can help.
