Thanks to all Derbyshire residents who have registered to use our household waste recycling centres so far.
 More than 20,000 residents have registered as part of a move to make things fairer and more cost-effective for Derbyshire residents by helping to reduce the amount of waste that is being brought to Derbyshire recycling centres from outside of the county.
If you live in Derbyshire and haven’t yet registered, there’s still time – we won’t be turning away unregistered vehicles immediately but we're asking you to sign-up before your next visit.
Entry to the recycling sites will be monitored using automatic number plate recognition technology (ANPR). Each Derbyshire resident over the age of 17 can register up to two vehicles. Registration is free of charge and covers all nine of our recycling centres. If you want to register a van to dispose of your household waste, you'll be required to register each time you wish to visit and van access will last 24 hours, except for camper vans which can be registered in the same way as cars are registered.

A community project that had a flying start in Bolsover is spreading its wings to Shirebrook.
Our library service was successful in its bid for £88,000 of government cash to widen participation and volunteering in local groups and events as a way to build networks that benefit individual residents and the whole community.
The money came from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's “Know Your Neighbourhood” fund.
The work in Bolsover – and now Shirebrook – focuses on encouraging people to get out to their local library – even if they’ve rarely been before – get to know their community, and try out free activities, workshops, arts and events.
Library staff worked alongside the local community and knowledgeable local organisations to create activities that people want and need – including Bubbles and Babies, where young families like Joshua's (pictured) can meet and play.

Calling Derbyshire pensioners! Check now if you qualify for Pension Credit and you could still be in time to get this year’s winter fuel payment.
It’s estimated that up to 10,000 pensioners in the county aren’t claiming the benefit boost that unlocks other support, including up to £300 for heating.
The last date for claiming Pension Credit in time to potentially qualify for the winter fuel allowance is Saturday 21 December. That’s because Pension Credit can be backdated for three months.
You could qualify for Pension Credit even if you:
- have significant savings (in the tens of thousands of pounds)
- are a couple with up to £460 a week coming in, but both qualify for disability benefits and are carers for each other
- own your own home.

Small businesses and independent traders in Derbyshire can benefit from a new trade waste scheme recently introduced at two of our household waste recycling centres – Stonegravels (Chesterfield) and Ashbourne.
The scheme operates between 8.30am to 9.30am and 5pm to 6pm daily, when the facilities are closed to the public.
Traders are charged to dispose of their trade waste according to the type of waste and its weight which will be checked on a weighbridge. Payment will be by card only.
Free registration is required to use the service which offers our traders benefits including no need for contracts, no minimum weights and competitive disposal costs. Registration and full terms and conditions can be found here.

How about a bit of Christmas shopping in a country park rather than a crowded high street?
Our shop at Shipley Country Park near Heanor offers a variety of Christmas gifts as do all our countryside visitor centres.
Once you’ve had a browse in the Shipley shop and perhaps squirrelled away a few gifts, we’d love to hear your thoughts about what you particularly want to see on sale in the shop throughout the year – sustainable gifts, cards, snacks, books, clothing, bird food, dog treats?
It may be that we already stock your favourites but there may be others you’d welcome. We’ve put together a short survey which should only take a few minutes to complete. The survey closes on Thursday 2 January 2025.

We're asking you to have your say on how our care services could be run in the future.
On Thursday 14 November our Cabinet agreed to a range of measures which will support changes in the way we provide in-house care services for older people.
A further public consultation around the future use of some of our remaining residential care homes has also been launched, running until Sunday 12 January 2025.
As well as an online questionnaire, face-to-face meetings are being held with care home residents, their families and carers.
A number of drop-in sessions are also taking place where you can give your views or get help to fill out the questionnaire.
The sessions are:
- Monday 16 December. Strutts Centre, Derby Road, Belper DE56 1UU. 10am to midday.
- Tuesday 17 December. Staveley Library Hall Lane, Staveley, Chesterfield S43 3TP. 9.30am to 11.30am.
- Tuesday 17 December. Buxton Library, Kents Bank Rd, Buxton SK17 9HW. 10am to midday.
The owner of a Ripley shop has been fined a total of £2,200 and ordered to pay £2,500 costs and a £880 victim surcharge after admitting selling a knife to an underaged person.
The successful prosecution was brought by our trading standards following an investigation by officers on the team.
Company director Omaid Darwish, 29, who owns and runs Bargain World in Oxford Street, Ripley, appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates on Monday (2 December 2024) to face a charge of selling a Kebo foldable knife with blades to an underage person, contrary to the Criminal Justice Act 1988.
The court heard that a test purchase exercise was carried out at the shop by trading standards officers in May this year during which the sale of the knife was made to a volunteer who was under the age of 18. No age or ID checks were asked for.
People wanting to report any suspicions of the sale of knives to underage people should report them to the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
