Library Service Consultation
Derbyshire residents are invited to have their say on a number of proposals which aim to keep library buildings open, as well as creating a modern, agile, family-friendly and sustainable service across the county. The proposals can be found in the library service’s new draft strategy 'A Modern Library Service for Derbyshire’ and can be found here
The proposals are aimed at meeting necessary budget savings and reflecting changing patterns of library use while ensuring the service remains as accessible, efficient and cost-effective as possible.
Complete the Derbyshire Public Library Service Consultation Survey here or ask for a paper copy in your local library. The closing date for responses is Saturday 2 November 2024.
If you have any questions about the consultation please email publiclibrary.consultation@derbyshire.gov.uk

New Adult Books
We’ve chosen to highlight three books published recently for you to enjoy. You can reserve them via our online catalogue.
The Map of Bones - Kate Mosse
Suzanne Joubert, a Huguenot refugee from war-torn France, is here to walk in her cousin's footsteps. Louise Reydon-Joubert, the notorious she-captain and pirate commander, landed at the Cape of Good Hope more than sixty years ago, then disappeared from the record as if she had never existed. Suzanne has come to find her - to lay the stories to rest. But all is not as it seems . . .
Franschhoek, Southern Africa, 1862. Nearly one hundred and eighty years after Suzanne's perilous journey, another intrepid and courageous woman of the Joubert family - Isabelle Lepard - has journeyed to the small frontier town once known as Oliftantshoek in search of her long-lost relations. A journalist and travel writer, intent on putting the women of her family back into the history books, she quickly discovers that the tragedies and crimes of the past are far from over. Isabelle faces a race against time if she is not only going to discover the truth but escape with her life . . .
By Any Other Name - Jodi Picoult
In 1581, Emilia Bassano is allowed no voice of her own. But as the Lord Chamberlain's mistress she has access to the theatre, and finds a way to bring her work to the stage secretly. And yet, creating some of the world's greatest dramatic masterpieces comes at a great cost: by paying a man for the use of his name, she will write her own out of history. His name? William Shakespeare . . .
In modern day New York, playwright Melina Green is determined to see one of her shows make the stage. After years of struggle to be recognised she has finally written again, inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor - Emilia Bassano, England's first published female poet. Although the challenges are different for her, four hundred years later, a woman's voice is still not heard like a man's. But what lengths will she be willing to go to in order to achieve her dreams?
Moving between Elizabethan England and modern day Manhattan, By Any Other Name is a beautifully written, compelling novel that explores the theme of identity and the ways in which two women, centuries apart-one of whom might just be the real author of Shakespeare's plays-are both forced to hide behind another name to make their voices heard.
The Wood at Midwinter - Susanna Clarke
Nineteen-year-old Merowdis Scott is an unusual girl. She can talk to animals and trees - and she is only ever happy when she is walking in the woods.
One snowy afternoon, out with her dogs and Apple the pig, Merowdis encounters a blackbird and a fox. As darkness falls, a strange figure enters in their midst - and the path of her life is changed forever.

The Bletchley Riddle - Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin

The Camel Who Had The Hump - Rachel Bright (Author) & Jim Field (Illustrator)

He's hot, he's tired and he certainly WON'T be walking today! There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that will get him out of his grump. Or is there? Might the desert's hoppiest, happiest creature be able to help?
Capybara: A First Field Guide to the Biggest Rodent in the World - Julia Mata (Author) & Greco Westermann (Illustrator)
You might know that capybaras are totally adorable and are related to guinea pigs, but there’s so much more to learn about these cuddly creatures!
